Bochum – Bundesliga 2 champs off to solid start?

It doesn’t take a maths whizz to work out that three points through three rounds gives newly-promoted Bochum a points-per-game figure of exactly one. Extrapolated over the course of a full season, would see them finish with 34 points – enough to survive the drop in each of the past four Bundesliga seasons. Thomas Reis can therefore be reasonably satisfied with his team’s endeavours till this point.

Their only win to date came here Vonovia-Ruhrstadion, inflicting Mainz’s sole loss of the campaign with a 2-0 scoreline. That has been sandwiched with disappointing efforts away from home, though, mustering a combined 0.86 xG in 1-0 and 2-1 defeats, respectively, to Wolfsburg and FC Koln. For context, they managed 0.37 more in their only home outing so far, in what was their fifth successive home league win.

Key Stat: Prior to beating Mainz 2-0 in their one and only home Bundesliga outing thus far, Bochum had conceded in all five previous home league games (all in Bundesliga 2).

Hertha Berlin – Old Lady verging on fourth-straight defeat?

Whereas there are positives to be gleaned from their opponents early performances upon returning to the Bundesliga for the first time in more than a decade, a ninth consecutive season in the German top-flight for Hertha Berlin has been nothing short of disastrous thus far. With zero points on the board, they are the only Bundesliga team still without a point, sitting rock-bottom with a minus eight goal difference.

Pal Dardai ensured the club staved off relegation last season with some resilient form towards the closing stages, embarking on an eight-match unbeaten run before finally succumbing in Hoffenheim on the final day. A summer of upheaval, with plenty of incomings and outgoings, appears to have disrupted their rhythm, though, with this the club’s worst start to a Bundesliga campaign in their history.

Key Stat: In last season’s Bundesliga campaign, Hertha Berlin went the entire season without registering a win over a newly-promoted side (D2 L2).

Bochum Vs Hertha Berlin Betting Advice

An opportunity for Bochum to put further daylight between themselves and the relegation places sees them welcome a Hertha Berlin outfit in disarray. The latter are the only Bundesliga team yet to pick up a point, losing their first three match-ups – with FC Koln, Wolfsburg and Bayern Munich – by a combined 2-10. With eight of the ten goals conceded by the capital club coming when they’ve travelled.

Bochum Vs Hertha Berlin – Key Facts:

  • Three points from three games constitutes a reasonable return for newly-promoted Bochum, especially when compared to a Hertha Berlin side yet to pick up a point.
  • A 2-0 victory over Mainz in their sole outing so far this season here at Vovovia-Ruhrstadion earned Bochum their fifth consecutive home league win.
  • This will mark Hertha Berlin’s third away Bundesliga fixture of the season, having already lost heavily away to FC Koln (3-1) and Bayern Munich (5-1).

Bochum have struggled to adapt on their travels as well, but did pick up a useful win over Mainz in their only home outing thus far. That made it five home wins in a row for last season’s Bundesliga 2 champions, each time scoring at least twice. Bearing in mind just how porous this Hertha Berlin defence has been on the road in the early stages, it seems inevitable the hosts will get chances.

Bochum are looking to win a sixth home league game on the spin, despite conceding in all but one of the past five. Hertha Berlin scored in five of their last six away Bundesliga games, but lost each of the past three. Czech forward Gerrit Holtmann loves playing at home for Bochum meanwhile, netting in three of the past four said fixtures.
