Bologna Preview – Prime opportunity to secure rare success over Rossoneri?

Prior to earning a surprising 2-1 win in Naples against Napoli a week ago, Bologna (12th – W4 D4 L6, GF20 GA23) had only managed three wins all season. All were over sides either still in the relegation zone or hovering above it, beating Brescia (3-4), Sampdoria (2-1) and SPAL (1-0) which also meant the trend for winning by a single goal continued. It is therefore no exaggeration claiming last week’s triumph over the Partenopei was their most impressive of the campaign thus far.

True, the opposition were in a bad moment both on and off the field. But so, too, were the Rossoblu who had taken the grand sum of one point from the last twelve available (D1 L3) before overcoming significant odds at San Paolo. Trailing at half-time, Bologna turned the game around in the second half through goals from Andreas Olsen and Nicola Sansone, and thus securing a first Serie A maximum haul since beating a struggling Sampdoria at home on 27 October.

Maintaining this momentum is key now for stricken manager Sinisa Mihajlovic, whose team return home seeking not only to improve upon a mixed record there this season of two wins, two draws and as many losses but also targeting a first win over AC Milan since 2016, when departing the San Siro with a 1-0 victory. Seven subsequent encounters have seen them avoid defeat only once (D1 L6), while it has been over eighteen years since they won this fixture in front of a home crowd (D4 L9 in the intervening meetings).

AC Milan Preview – Fruitful fixture to deliver another points haul?

Talk of Zlatan Ibrahimovic returning to the club appears to be gathering pace and has gone some way to serving as a distraction from important matters taking place out on the pitch, which, for some supporters, may even be a positive thing. Escaping the tedium of some rather dour performances and thoroughly underwhelming results. Yet the mood at AC Milan (11th – W5 D2 L7, GF13 GA17) lifted last week on the back of summer signing Theo Hernandez’s late winner away in Parma.

AC Milan have now claimed four points from their last two encounters, which may not seem newsworthy but is as many as they managed in the previous five games combined. The late show in Parma, with the narrow victory fully deserved based on chances created (xG: PAR 0.32 – 1.99 MIL), would complement the 1-1 draw earned at home to Napoli the preceding week. It is momentum they can now carry into a fixture that has been very kind to them through the years.

Six of the last seven league meetings with Bologna would end in Rossoneri celebrations, not losing away to their upcoming opponents since 2002. If those are encouraging omens, their record away from home this season may not be. Three wins and four defeats, scoring more than one goal only once whilst restricting their opponents to no more than a solitary goal on five occasions. This may not be a thriller, therefore, although AC Milan would care less about that should another low scoring success similar to last week materialise.

Bologna Vs AC Milan Key Facts:

  • Victorious away to Napoli last time out when winning 2-1, each of Bologna‘s last eight Serie A matches have now featured both teams scoring.
  • Beating Parma 1-0 away last weekend maintained a trend which has seen AC Milan score no more than one goal in six of their seven away games this season.
  • AC Milan completely boss the recent head-to-head on account of them winning six of the last seven league meetings (W6 D1).

Betting Summary

Just a point separates them in the Serie A table, a reflection on the disappointing term AC Milan (6/4 PaddyPower) are having more than anything their opponents are doing. For Bologna (9/5 Unibet), mid-table suits them just fine and they can approach this fixture under very little pressure now six points clear of relegation. The same cannot be said for the Rossoneri, who desperately need to start climbing the table.

While AC Milan have improved lately, is a couple of reasonably good displays enough for them to warrant favouritism here? This, remember, a team that this season has lost more times on its travels than it has won, struggling to trouble home defences throughout (they average less than a goal per game away – 0.82). Bologna, meanwhile, can boast home advantage, where they have been beaten only twice since the start of the term, but also carry a significant scoring threat having netted in eight consecutive fixtures.

Seeing as Bologna are a good bet to continue their scoring streak, this would require AC Milan scoring at least twice for victory, something they have managed only once in seven road encounters thus far. Therefore the visitors simply have to be opposed here.
