Bologna Preview – Beginning new season as they finished the last?

Under the tutelage of Sinisa Mihajlovic, Bologna would do enough to avoid a relegation scrap in Serie A last season, ending 2019/20 in the comfort of mid-table after winning a third of their league matches (W12 D11 L15) to finish in 12th. Just five wins were accrued at their Renato Dall’Ara, though, where they struggled throughout and were reliant on beating some of the division’s poorest sides.

Aside from their smash and grab 2-1 victory over Atalanta, this was a team whose record on their own patch was propped up by wins over clubs who finished in 20th (SPAL), 19th (Brescia), 18th (Lecce) and 15th (Sampdoria). Any one of substance tended to at least hold their own here, which doesn’t bode particularly well ahead of Monday night’s visit from a Parma side that finished directly above them in 11th.

The Rossoblu didn’t particularly finish last season strongly, either. They won only one of their final nine Serie A fixtures (W1 D3 L5), against relegated Lecce, which also happened to be their sole success at home since February (W1 D4 L3). So last week’s opening defeat away to AC Milan, losing 2-0 at San Siro, was much of the same, with the only surprise being that it could have been by more (xG: MIL 2.89 – 0.81 BOL).

Parma Preview – Still adjusting to life without key man?

In the end, 2019/20 turned out reasonably well for Parma, a club whose primary objective at the start of each season is maintaining their top-light status. From this angle, then, a finish of 11th (W14 D7 L17) has to be considered satisfactory. A lack of consistency ultimately held them back from pushing on and securing a top-half finish, though, something they may view as realistic in the season ahead.

However, tangible progress this season is going to be difficult without arguably last season’s star performer. Dejan Kulusevski was immense in the attacking third of the pitch, contributing towards more goals (10 goals and 8 assists) than any other player at the club, and his subsequent switch to Juventus is a big loss. On this basis, perhaps we shouldn’t have been surprised with their limp display first time out.

In their opening fixture of the new Serie A season, Parma hosted a Napoli side they managed to beat home and away last term. On this occasion, however, the Gialloblu were soundly beaten (xG: PAR 0.25 – 1.41 NAP), barely attempting a shot on goal as they deservedly went down 2-0 at home. A hugely underwhelming start, considering they ended last season winning three of their final four contests.

Bologna Vs Parma Betting Advice

Matchday 1 was a rude awakening for these teams. Both were soundly beaten without registering a goal, as Bologna went down 2-0 at AC Milan while Parma fell to the same scoreline at home to Napoli. At the very least the scorelines were a surprise. Last season, these two teams were a big hit for Both Teams to Score backers. So it really was no surprise that both league meetings between them ended 2-2.

Bologna Vs Parma – Key Facts

  • Following their 2-0 loss on the road to AC Milan on Matchday 1, Bologna have now failed to win in eight of their last nine Serie A games (W1 D3 L5).
  • A 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Napoli in their first fixture of 2020/21 snapped a 13-game streak of both teams scoring in league games involving Parma.
  • Both league meetings last season ended in a 2-2 draw. Meanwhile, each of the previous four head-to-heads in Bologna produced both teams scoring.

Both Teams to Score has to be the bet here, despite neither pulling up any trees on their first outings. Bologna have seen nine of their last twelve Serie A games finish with both teams among the goals, including each of the last five held at their Renato Dall’Ara stadium, while Parma both scored and conceded across all of their final thirteen league games of last season. 2-2 Draw.
