Bolton Wanderers will start their new season back in the Championship following last season’s automatic promotion from League One, as The Trotters bounced back in triumphant style under the guidance of manager Phil Parkinson.
Bolton will take on Leeds United this afternoon at their Macron Stadium with renewed belief and optimism that they can consolidate their position in the English second tier this time around, although their pre-season warm up fixtures saw Bolton win just three of their seven matches played.
Much will depend upon the fitness of experienced defender, Wheater in this campaign, but up front, Parkinson has a useful looking attacking quartet in Le Fondre, Madine, Armstrong and Wilbraham which he can rotate with seemingly no ‘weak links’.
Visitors Leeds United produced a strong first half of last season as they seemed to be on their way to achieving a play-off spot under former manager, Garry Monk, but United fell away sharply in the second half of the season, winning just five further matches from early February to the end of the season.
On the positive side, former owner, Massimo Cellini has been bought out by another Italian, Andrea Radrizzani, while Monk left for Middlesbrough, and former APOEL Nicosia manager, Thomas Christiansen, has replaced him in the Elland Road ‘hot seat’.
New Zealand striker, Chris Wood, topped the Championship goalscoring charts last season with 27 goals, and it still mystifies me why he isn’t playing Premier League football. If Leeds can go on a winning run again and keep Woods after January, they could challenge for a play-off spot.
