Preview: The final match in Ligue 1 for this weekend comes from Bordeaux and their Matmut Atlantique stadium, a venue that has historically proved problematic for visiting Marseille. The latter boast all the form, though, but will that count for anything in this particular fixture?

Bordeaux Preview – Paulo Sousa’s side turned a corner with Nantes triumph?

Jimmy Briand became the club’s outright leading scorer in Ligue 1 for 2019/20 when netting the only goal of the match away to Nantes last time out, firing home the decisive strike four minutes from the end. Proving that, at 34, the experienced goal-getter still has much to offer this Bordeaux (10th – W8 D5 L8) team. Although the sheer fact nobody else has managed more than his somewhat modest total of six goals this season is, however, slightly disconcerting.

Even more concerning, however, has been the general form of the team. Les Girondins were stuck in a rut prior to last week’s victory – their first in the league since thrashing Nimes 6-0 at home at the very beginning of December. Four successive league defeats would follow thereafter, losing away to Marseille (3-1) and Rennes (1-0) but also twice at their Matmut Atlantique against Strasbourg (0-1) and Lyon (1-2).

Three of those losses were slender in margin apart from one – the 3-1 scoreline at Marseille, who were dominant throughout according to xG (MAR 1.96 – 0.08). This is a reversal of that meeting, but the manner of the first suggests coach Paulo Sousa has much to work on if his side are to bridge the gap second time around irrespective of this being a home fixture. Bordeaux possess a mixed record in said matches this season: W4 D2 L4.

Marseille Preview – Simply no stopping Villas-Boas in-form L’OM?

Since the start of the Ligue 1 season, Marseille (2nd – W12 D6 L3) would fail to score on only two occasions at their Stade Velodrome – the very first game, which was a surprising 2-0 loss to Reims, and the most recent, a goalless stalemate with Angers. The latter bringing to an end their five-game winning streak on home soil whilst, by some small margin of comfort perhaps, extending their current unbeaten league run to ten (W8 D2).

Put simply, L’OM are purring right now under Andre Villas-Boas. No defeat since their pummelling in Paris to the perennial champions is incredibly impressive, spanning nearly three whole months and, as previously mentioned, ten Ligue 1 fixtures. There hasn’t been much let-up on their travels, either. The last four such games comprising of wins at Toulouse (0-2), Angers (0-2) and even third-placed Rennes (0-1), with the outlier being the 1-1 draw at lowly Metz.

Only PSG, meanwhile, have so far earned more points away from home than Villas-Boas’ in-form charges, who have taken 18 from a possible 30. Key to this return has been a resolute rearguard, having restricted seven of their ten hosts to no more than a single goal. That does include a clean sheet in three of the most recent four. Another of those could be crucial here, in an historically difficult fixture and, more pertinently, due to them averaging only 1.3 goals per game away from the Velodrome.

Betting Summary

No visiting side has prevailed in this fixture since 2008, while Marseille have not beaten Bordeaux on their travels this century. Both are truly remarkable and suggest form could go out the window on Sunday, which would benefit one side a great deal more than the other. Bordeaux only recently halted a losing run of four games in Ligue 1, whereas Marseille are irresistible at the moment having negotiated the last ten in the league without incurring defeat (W8 D2).

Bordeaux Vs Marseille – Key Facts:

  • Beating Nantes 1-0 away last weekend brought to an end Bordeaux‘s four-game losing run in Ligue 1.
  • Drawing 0-0 at home with Angers last time out stretched the unbeaten streak of Marseille to ten league games (W8 D2).
  • Marseille have never won away at Bordeaux in Ligue 1 (D11 L10), succumbing to a 2-0 defeat there last season.

Marseille are deservedly favourites, especially after winning the December clash comfortably, 3-1. Their record as the away side in this fixture remains atrocious, however, and as such I feel compelled to back Bordeaux getting something. L’OM don’t score very often on their travels, while Les Girondins are efficient defensively in front of a home crowd. So, some hope, perhaps, that the hosts can grind out a favourable low-scoring outcome of some variety. Draw & Under 2.5 Goals is 11/4 (Boylesports).
