Bordeaux – Can Les Girondins ease relegation fears?

Club president Gerard Lopez bemoaned “a lack of respect” after Bordeaux were forced to fulfil their opening fixture of 2022, away to Brest in the Coupe de France, on 2 January despite being without as many as 21 players through illness. Even a full strength Les Girondins would find Friday’s opponents a stiff ask, however. Coach Vladimir Petkovic saw his men conclude December in dismal form with one win in their final seven Ligue 1 outings (D2 L4). They have won three league fixtures all season – versus sides in 15th (Troyes), 14th (Reims) and 20th (St-Etienne) – and once in ten attempts at their Matmut Atlantique in south-west France.

Key Stat: Bordeaux are still to register a first clean sheet in a home Ligue 1 game in 2021-22, shipping at least two goals in each of the last five such fixtures (12 goals conceded across this period in total).

 

 

Marseille – No way past Ligue 1’s meanest defensive unit?

Having only shared the points in their latest Ligue 1 encounter, requiring a late Dmitri Payet penalty to salvage something at home to Reims, Marseille had to settle for third place at the season’s midway stage. However, with Nice in second better off by a solitary goal and Rennes in fourth two points further back, L’OM, whom boast a game in hand over all their top-of-the-table rivals, remain well-placed to achieve their objectives.

Jorge Sampaoli has had a transformative affect since taking over as manager in February of last year. Initially they were thrilling to watch, but now they are a bit of everything. They boast the meanest defence in France (15 conceded in 18 games), keeping out five of seven opponents prior to Friday’s trip to Bordeaux. This includes three straight wins to nil on the road at Clermont, Nantes and high-scoring Strasbourg.

Key Stat: Marseille rounded out 2021 by winning three of their final five Ligue 1 matches (D1 L1). Meanwhile, of their ten league victories in total this season, all but three saw them record a clean sheet in the process which includes their last four in the competition.

Bordeaux Vs Marseille Betting Advice

Friday’s hosts have actually fared better in the attacking third of the pitch this season than Marseille (30 to 26). This has come with a steep price, though, with no team in Ligue 1 allowing more than their 43 from 19 matchdays so far. Compare and contrast this with a visiting team boasting the best rearguard in Ligue 1 (15 conceded in 18 games) and you begin to see why an away win is priced as short as it is.

 

 

Even at their current odds-on quote, Marseille look a spot of value. That is, however, before taking into account their truly wretched record in this fixture. L’OM failed to win either Ligue 1 meeting last term (D2) and haven’t won as the visitors since 1977! But this is likely why we are getting a generous price on them.
