Preview: This looks a tall order for visiting Nimes, the club without a win in eight Ligue 1 games and still searching for its first away win of the term. Will they finally have something to celebrate inside Matmut Atlantique, the home of Bordeaux?

Bordeaux Vs Nimes Live Stats & Betting Odds

Bordeaux Preview – Third consecutive home win imminent?

Les Girondins (5th – W6 D5 L4, GF21 GA17) approach this fixture, their eighth of the season at the Matmut Atlantique stadium, in relatively good shape. Last week’s 1-1 draw in Reims – dropping two points after conceding a stoppage time leveller – stretched their unbeaten run to four (W2 D2), while as hosts Paulo Sousa’s team have won each of the last two against Nantes (2-0) and Monaco (2-1). In spite of this, we can still find reasonably good odds about a home win here.

This season has certainly been in sharp contrast to the one previous. Spending much of 2018-19 flirting with relegation, the club are back mixing it towards the upper echelon of Ligue 1 following an encouraging start. The one criticism has to be a lack of consistency, failing to string together consecutive victories despite winning on six occasions. It is slightly irrelevant as far as this specific fixture is concerned considering they drew last time out, though it does highlight how unreliable they can be.

The same could be said about them at home (W3 D2 L2). Winning just 42% of the time in these fixtures, Bordeaux would manage only one win (W1 D2 L2) from the opening five contests staged on home soil prior to their previously mentioned success there. Meanwhile, the only visiting teams who have failed to score against them were Metz and Nantes – two of the least prolific sides in Ligue 1 this season – having failed in keeping a clean sheet, home or away, in eight of the last nine.

Nimes Preview – Les Crocodiles in hopeless form?

There used to be a common phrase in England: “second season syndrome”. For when newly promoted clubs defied all expectations upon making either their league debuts or simply a long-awaited return. Nimes (19th – W2 D6 L6, GF12 GA18) appear to be suffering from this very predicament, struggling to replicate the achievements of last season when they would comfortably avoid relegation with a ninth-place finish.

All the important metrics are down this season. Sat three points off safety in nineteenth, Les Crocodiles have simply not been snapping up enough points thus far. Coach Bernard Blaquart has overseen a team that has recorded fewer wins (2) than all other sides in the top tier, while only two (Dijon and Reims) have found the back of the net with less frequency than their 12 from 14 games. Meanwhile, only five of those were scored on their travels.

More alarming than any of these statistics will be not only recent results but their results over a longer period. Their previous eight matches in Ligue 1 have garnered a mere four points out of a possible 24 (D4 L4), scoring one goal or fewer on seven occasions. Their last win, meanwhile, dates right the way back to 21 September, when they edged out Toulouse, who are currently rock bottom of the league, at home 1-0. An away win has yet to materialise (W0 D4 L4), however, losing the latest two to Strasbourg (4-1) and Angers (1-0).

Bordeaux Vs Nimes Key Facts:

  • Bordeaux can boast of wins in each of their last two Ligue 1 home games, though their record as hosts remains indifferent this season (W3 D2 L2).
  • Nimes are one of four teams still to win a Ligue 1 fixture away from home (W0 D3 L5); in fact they haven’t won any of the last eight (D4 L4), home or away.
  • Last season, Nimes went unbeaten across their league meetings with Bordeaux, winning 2-1 as hosts and drawing 3-3 away.

Betting Summary

If this fixture remains true to form then Bordeaux (19/20 Betway) should celebrate a third consecutive home victory in Ligue 1. Paulo Sousa’s men haven’t lost any of the last four in Ligue 1 (W2 D2), which includes successive home wins, and have the added motivation of knowing a win here could send them third in the table. Whereas Nimes (18/5 Unibet) are languishing near the bottom of the league, three points from safety and with no win in eight matches (D4 L4) – which becomes none at all as the visiting side in 2019-20 (W0 D3 L5).

Contrasting forms as well as boasting home advantage, along with a distinct lack of goal threat from the visitors, should all work in Bordeaux’s favour. A routine win is therefore expected for the home side, at better than expected odds it must be said. That is partly due to their own inconsistencies, though this should be relatively easy pickings. All three of Bordeaux’s home victories this season would see them win either 2-0 or 2-1, so a bet on either could prove a shrewd move.
