Bordeaux Preview – Les Girondins overachieving?
It will be fascinating to see what sort of response Paulo Sousa harnesses from his Bordeaux (5th – W7 D5 L5, GF28 GA20) team at the weekend. The Portuguese coach, who has been linked with the vacant managerial post at Arsenal, had masterminded a five game unbeaten run (W3 D2) – their second-longest sequence without losing this season – before an abject performance in Marseille last the time out, losing 3-1 at the Stade Velodrome despite taking an early lead through Yacine Adli’s long-range effort.
Following up one of their poorest displays of the season, particularly in attack where their expected goals figure against Marseille was a pathetic 0.08 according to Infogol, has been made easier by the fact they are back at home (W4 D2 L2) this weekend. It also helps to be facing one of the worst travellers in the entire league. By some contrast, Bordeaux have won the last three Ligue 1 matches in front of their own fans, against Monaco (2-1), Nantes (2-0) and Nimes (6-0).
However, in two of those aforementioned victories, Sousa’s team came out second best in the xG battle, which suggests they were a touch fortunate to have taken as many points as they did. Moreover, just the four clean sheets all season (in 17 matches) also provides the impression that their defence can be got it, shipping at least one goal to ten of their previous twelve opponents. Conversely only Brest, in a 2-2 draw back in September, scored more than once against them as the visiting team, with even the might of PSG limited to a solitary effort.

However, it would only need a dip in form at home for their situation to become decidedly less comfortable.
Surprisingly, considering they have only managed the one win away from home all season, there are worse travellers in Ligue 1 than Strasbourg, who have earned the grand sum of four points on their travels thus far. Three of those coming in their 4-0 rout of Amiens last month – a result very few could have foreseen what with Thierry Laurey’s side failing to even score in their opening six away fixtures prior to that blitz, let alone win.
Since then Le Racing have run Lyon close at home (L1-2), been annihilated away to a relegation threatened Brest side 5-0, and won a pulsating encounter with Toulouse 4-2. There was also a 4-1 home win against Nimes prior to all of this. Goals have suddenly become vogue in their matches then, something that certainly was not the case earlier in the campaign – their last five Ligue 1 games have now all produced three or more goals when only two of their first twelve had done so.

An alternative route into this contest could be goals. Strasbourg have undoubtedly improved in attack, scoring thirteen times across their last five matches (all of which produced Over 2.5 Goals) and failing to score only once in that period. Their previous two away encounters, meanwhile, featured them scoring four in one and conceding five in the other. As for Bordeaux, four of their last five Ligue 1 encounters finished with goals for both sides, with the latest two played out on home soil returning favourable scorelines of 2-1 and 6-0.
