Preview: Last season’s runners-up in Germany, Borussia Dortmund, will mount another assault on the title when they kick-off the new season at home to Augsburg. If this contest is anything remotely close to the corresponding fixture from the previous campaign, well then we could in for a real treat. The famous Westfalenstadion is the venue for this enticing matchday one clash.

Borussia Dortmund Preview – Black and Yellows simply too good at home?

Nobody truthfully expected them to run Bayern Munich as close as they did last season, to the point where a nine-point lead at one stage meant they were odds-on to claim a first Bundesliga title since 2012. In the end, Lucien Favre’s side finished two points adrift in second position – but a pro-active stance in the summer transfer window has enhanced the prospects of another strong push in the season ahead.

The problem now is, people expect more from Dortmund. There wasn’t nearly as much pressure on them last time around because so few expected them do as well as they did. However, at general odds of 4/1 to lift the trophy come May, everybody now expects them to be winning almost every game, which is a whole new type of pressure. Some shrewd acquisitions, though, bringing in Julian Brandt, Thorgan Hazard, Nico Schulz and former defender Mats Hummels, has significantly improved what was already a promising squad.

The Westfalenstadion provided a formidable backdrop for The Black and Yellows’ surprise title challenge last season. Dortmund registered maximum points from 14 of their 17 matches played at home (W14 D2 L1, GF52 GA25), with no side in the division recording more wins or scoring more often at home. Intriguingly, one of those victories was earned in this very fixture, although a stoppage time winner from super-sub Paco Alcacer was required in order to seal the deal in a 4-3 thriller.

Best Borussia Dortmund Bet: Dortmund to WIN & Over 3.5 Goals @ 11/8 Boylesports. That 4-3 win against Augsburg was no one-off. Goals were a consistent theme of Dortmund’s home games; 88% of their home matches produced Over 2.5 Goals, and 71% produced Over 3.5 Goals. Considering they were victorious more often than not in these matches, banking on the hosts winning another high-scoring encounter could be shrewd.

Augsburg Preview – Away woes set to continue?

Gearing up for their ninth crack at Bundesliga football are Augsburg, the team from Bavaria whom barely avoided some late relegation drama last season to finish one place above the relegation play-off spot in 15th. And it wasn’t as though they saved themselves, either; their form towards the end was wretched, losing three of their final four matches which included a shambolic performance away at Wolfsburg in the very last game of the season, conceding EIGHT times in an 8-1 annihilation.

The club have made efforts to bolster the squad in a bid to avoid a similar occurrence to last season, although it speaks volumes when the largest fee exchanged for a new signing was south of £10-million – a great deal less than the figure reportedly shelled out by the opposition for some of their marquee additions. This isn’t to say Augsburg haven’t done good business, only time will tell on that front, but it does serve to emphasis the chasm which separates these two clubs in terms of ambition and financial clout.

However, one thing Augsburg did do particularly well in the last campaign was give Dortmund a good game. Only a late goal denied them a share of the points in Dortmund, losing 4-3 in the end, but revenge was served back at home when a 2-1 win at the very beginning of May dealt a huge blow to Dortmund’s title push. Unfortunately, though, Augsburg only managed to avoid defeat on seven occasions away from home (W3 D4 L10) and have won only one of their past twelve road encounters (W1 D3 L8).

Best Augsburg Bet – Both Teams to Score @ Evens WilliamHill. The Bavarian club did locate the back of the opposing team’s net more often than not in their away encounters, doing so 59% of the time. That included the occasion when they netted three at Dortmund, albeit in an agonising 4-3 defeat.

Borussia Dortmund V Augsburg Key Facts:

  • No team registered more points, earned more wins or scored more goals at home in last season’s Bundesliga than Dortmund (W14 D2 L1, GF52 GA25).
  • Augsburg managed only three away wins throughout 2018/19 (W3 D4 L10), winning just one of their last 12 such fixtures (W1 D3 L8).
  • The previous eight league meetings between these sides have produced both teams scoring.

Betting Summary

A significant season potentially awaits Borussia Dortmund, whose surprising but nevertheless impressive title push last time means expectations are approaching unprecedented levels, in recent times at least. Lucien Favre’s men will be keen to open with a statement victory first time out at home, where their record for winning in the league was unmatched in 2018/19. Goals were also common theme at the Westfalenstadion, with last season’s meeting ending 4-3 in favour of the home side.

Despite running the hosts close in this same fixture in 2018/19, the likelihood of Augsburg collecting a positive outcome at the weekend feels rather bleak. The summer break came at the right time for a team that ended the last campaign in abysmal form, losing three of their final four fixtures that included an horrific 8-1 defeat away to Wolfsburg. However, this remains a side that has only avoided defeat on four occasions in its last 12 away matches (W1 D3 L8).

Dortmund probably over performed to an extent last season. Some shrewd additions to their squad, though, should mean another strong campaign beckons, beginning with an expected win versus Augsburg. Last season’s meeting saw the home side prevail in a seven goal thriller and while I have my doubts about the scoreline being as close, there really shouldn’t be any shortage of goals.
