Borussia Dortmund Preview – Will improving Dortmund make it five wins in six league games to stay with top two?

The 4-3 defeat away to Bayer Leverkusen at the start of this month looked to have ended any hopes Borussia Dortmund had of challenging for the title. A draw between Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, coupled with two straight wins in the league for Dortmund means they are again within touching distance. They come into Saturday’s game in third place and four points behind leaders Bayern who also play tomorrow.
The inconsistencies which have plagued Dortmund’s season so far are indicated by the fact they have not won more than three games in a row since August. When you consider their squad and the resources they have, they need to be doing better.

There’s no doubting the January signing of Norwegian sensation Erling Haland has given Dortmund a new lease of life. His nine goals in the Bundesliga alone, from just six games, is hugely impressive. Unsurprisingly that’s a league record and he’s also taking his form into the Champions League scoring both against PSG in the recent last-16 tie.

Currently ninth, last weekend’s defeat at home to Fortuna Dusseldorf was their sixth defeat in nine matches against teams who are placed 13th or below in the table. Christian Streich will be frustrated as despite being only three points outside the European spots, it could and probably should be even better.

Another concern for Freiburg coming into this game is their lack of goals. It’s three blanks in their previous five matches which is more than the previous 18 where they failed to hit the net twice. Although a small sample, the two are clearly related and is an explanation for their recent poor form.

Goals from open play are even more of a concern for Streich as his team have scored just three in their last 12 games which is a league low. It’s in contrast to goals from set pieces which have been responsible for nine of their last 13 strikes.
