Borussia Dortmund – BVB showing little sign of Der Klassiker hangover?

Inspired by a returning Jadon Sancho, who would start a Bundesliga game for the first time since the resumption on 16 May, Borussia Dortmund (2nd – W18 D6 L5) emphatically responded to falling seven points behind the leaders as they annihilated rock-bottom Paderborn last Sunday. Sancho netting a second half hat-trick during a 6-1 victory that reinforces BVB’s strong position in the Champions League places.

Four points clear of fifth-placed Leverkusen, Lucien Favre’s men boast a little more wiggle room than their rivals, which should allow them to better express themselves in the final few fixtures of 2019/20. That was certainly the case last time out, although it did take them the best part of 50 minutes to find their groove. Dortmund’s seventh win in eight league games (W7 L1), and only the third goal conceded during this sequence – a contentious one at that.

Despite their obvious good form, this is not a fixture they can take lightly. Points were dropped in two of the past three campaigns at home to Hertha Berlin, including a 2-2 draw in 2018/19 which, bearing in mind the league was lost by two points, was one of several results they would later come to rue. This season, though, Dortmund have registered maximum points in 10 of 14 matches played at Signal Iduna Park.

Draw & Both To Score

Hertha Berlin – A team reborn under new manager Labbadia?

Since the resumption of the Bundesliga in mid-May only Bayer Munich have claimed more points than Hertha Berlin (9th – W10 D8 L11), whose performances under Bruno Labbadia are that of a side completely transformed from the one he inherited in 14th in April. Turning a group which was in disarray and uncertain of its top flight future into genuine contenders for a top-six finish that would see them compete in Europe next season.

Everything to play for then in the remaining five matches. That very much includes this weekend’s journey to Dortmund, where they’ve successfully avoided defeat on two of the past three visits. Moreover, they’ll arrive in outstanding form with three wins and no losses sustained since returning to action, scoring 12 whilst giving up only two in return. Sixth-placed Hoffenheim, on four more points, are now firmly in their sights.

This impressive upturn will be tested on Saturday, however, of that there is no doubt, but Hertha Berlin have no reason to feel daunted. It has been more than five months since they lost an away fixture, going seven such games without defeat (W4 D3) and more than holding their own against some of the other top-four protagonists, leaving Leverkusen (0-1) and RB Leipzig (2-2) relatively unscathed and four points better off.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Hertha Berlin Betting Advice

It took Dortmund until the second half to get going against Paderborn last time, and that poor first period won’t want to be replicated by Lucien Favre (Paderborn broke very well but lacked cutting edge). That is because leaving it late might not bear much fruit on this occasion, not with Hertha Berlin recently excelling late on in contests, scoring nine of eleven goals since the Bundesliga resumption after half-time.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Hertha Berlin – Key Facts

  • Both teams arrive in excellent form; Dortmund winning seven of the last eight in Bundesliga competition while Hertha are without defeat in their last six, winning three of most recent four.
  • Dortmund have conceded a combined one goal in previous five home Bundesliga games, however, Hertha are seeking to score for an eighth consecutive away fixture.
  • Honours even at Signal Iduna Park in 2018/19, finishing 2-2, as Hertha Berlin avoided defeat in Dortmund for a second time in past three seasons (D2 L1).

Therefore, it wouldn’t be a surprise were we to see a lightning quick start from Dortmund, who took an early lead in last season’s corresponding fixture only to be pegged back shortly before the break. Dortmund/Draw appeals at long odds (20/1 BetVictor), as does Over 1.5 First Half Goals (11/10 PaddyPower), which landed in their previous three meetings. Ultimately, though, we should be treated to a few goals.
