Borussia Dortmund Preview – Qualification rests solely on performance in Germany?

Possessing one of the most exciting and devastating attacks in Europe – their 63 goals from 22 games is a league-leading figure in Germany’s Bundesliga for 2019-20. Borussia Dortmund could therefore prove a shrewd investment at attractive odds of 50/1 with Bet365 to finish the campaign as Champions League winners for only a second time in their history, last achieving the feat in 1996-97.

Unfortunately, though, there are enough valid reasons to be sceptical about their chances in this competition. A defence that fails to inspire any confidence, conceding 1.5 goals per game in Germany this season and managing only one clean sheet during the group phase, is likely to wilt under the pressure that some of Europe’s finest will no doubt exert on them. Moreover, their Last-Sixteen draw was among the worst case scenarios.

This is a huge test, against a more balanced PSG team. Dortmund haven’t exactly excelled in these daunting encounters either, claiming four points from their four toughest matches in the group stage with Barcelona and Inter Milan (W1 D1 L2). Admittedly they did fare better in Germany, at their raucous and imposing Signal Iduna Park, beating the Italians 3-2 and being incredibly unfortunate to only draw 0-0 with Barcelona. This home leg feels decisive for The Yellow and Blacks.

Paris Saint-Germain Preview – Les Parisiens to build on promising group campaign?

Everything in Paris has been geared towards success in this competition. They certainly appear to have stronger claims this time around. Imperious during the group phase, Paris Saint-Germain ranked second in both points taken (16) and goals scored (17), while their two goals conceded – which both came in the same game, a 2-2 draw in Spain against Real Madrid – was at least two better than any other defence. Just four teams, meanwhile, are a shorter price – 15/2 with Betway – in the outright betting.

This newfound resilience should serve them well in these latter stages, where more measured displays are needed to navigate the better teams. Their group wasn’t the most fearsome but to win five of six matches without shipping a goal was impressive regardless, and a continuation of their form domestically having secured 13 of their 20 victories in France’s Ligue 1 whilst maintaining a clean sheet.

Though Saturday’s thrilling 4-4 draw in Amiens did make it four successive games in league and cup in which at least one goal was conceded. In truth it was a much-changed team named by Thomas Tuchel, with Kylian Mbappe and Neymar held back altogether as Marquinhos and Marco Verrati only made half-time cameos. The draw bringing an end to a nine-match winning sequence, seven of which earned on the road which may augur well for their chances ahead of this trip to Germany.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Paris Saint-German Betting Advice

More often than not the knockout rounds in the Champions League are cautious affairs. Particularly the first-legs, as both sides seek to avoid a damaging result. That doesn’t seem remotely possible here, though, as two attack-minded sides slug it out in Germany. PSG are capable of playing with more maturity and organisation. Dortmund, however, are a different animal on home soil and remain unbeaten in said games in both the Bundesliga (W8 D3) and Europe (W2 D1) this season, averaging nearly four goals-a-game in the former.

Borussia Dortmund Vs PSG – Key Facts

  • In the group stage of this season’s Champions League, Borussia Dortmund registered seven of their final total of ten points from home matches – beating Inter Milan and Slavia Prague but drawing with Barcelona.
  • PSG were utterly dominant in Group A meanwhile, winning five of six games – all without conceding – and dropping points only in a 2-2 draw away to Real Madrid.
  • This will be a first meeting between the two clubs in the Champions League, having previously met in the Europa League knockouts in 2010 – both ties producing low-scoring draws (1-1 in Germany and 0-0 in France).

Bearing in mind how inconsistent they can be on their travels, this is a huge opening 90 minutes for the home side. On this basis, then, you’d have to expect a big concerted effort in this first-leg. For this reason, coupled with their superb exploits on home soil thus far, odds of around 2/1 on Borussia Dortmund earning a first-leg lead are very appealing. It would also be a significant surprise were there not a few goals, which would explain such short odds available on BTTS (4/9 WilliamHill) and Over 3.5 Goals (23/20 Betfair).
