Braga Preview – Formidable hosts must guard against complacency?

As manager, Ruben Amorim has to somehow keep his players motivated until the end of the season. January’s capture of the Taca de Liga (Portugal’s version of the League Cup) means the season has been a success despite suffering an earlier than anticipated exit from Europe whilst also struggling to keep pace with the searing pace of Benfica and FC Porto in the league. So, what is left for them?

Well, Braga (3rd – W13 D4 L6) find themselves comfortably marooned in third place. Not nearly close enough to the leaders to challenge, with the gap a gargantuan 14 points, but boasting a six-point buffer over Rio Ave in fifth for them not to be overly concerned about the possibility of missing out on European qualification. Last weekend seen them labour to an unconvincing 2-1 victory away to 14th-placed Maritimo, only clinching maximum points in second-half stoppage time.

That was Braga’s first competitive game since suffering a 4-2 aggregate defeat to Rangers in the Europa League, in which they were beaten home and away. Their form has otherwise been excellent, though, especially in Primeira Liga where they are now approaching double figures since last incurring a loss (9 games – W8 D1). At home, meanwhile, they’ve tasted defeat only twice in the league in 2019-20 (W6 D3 L2), winning three of the last four.

Portimonense Preview – Visitors lacking form as well as goal threat?

Since their promotion to Portugal’s top division for the 2017-18 term, the club would comfortably avoid relegation with back-to-back mid-table finishes of 10th and 11th. Yet there is nothing comfortable about their current predicament. Portimonense (17th – W2 D10 L11) are averaging a meager 0.7 points per game across their opening 23 Primeira Liga fixtures, with only Aves enduring a poorer campaign at this stage.

A goalless draw at home to Vitoria Setubal last weekend did at least bolster their points tally ever so slightly, but, in truth, it was another desperate showing. Their winless run is now up to eleven games (D5 L6), since turning over Famalicao at the end of November to win 2-1 in front of their own fans. Their last win on the road, however, came in their very first outing of the season when beating Tondela 2-1 in August, with their record thereafter abysmal: D4 L7.

No team has won fewer games (2) or drawn more often (10) than Portimonense this season, who are also averaging less goals per game (0.65) than all other sides in the top tier. No more than goal has been scored in 20 out of 23 fixtures thus far, failing to net eleven times. On a more positive note, 31 conceded is a respectable return. They have also produced several creditable displays against the league’s elite, losing by a solitary goal home and away to FC Porto and only losing the reverse of this fixture 1-0.

Braga Vs Portimonense Betting Advice

There is a huge disparity here that anything other than a Braga victory would constitute a significant upset. The hosts are seven wins from eight in the league and have won three of the last four staged on home soil. Meanwhile, Portimonense haven’t won a Primeira Liga fixture since the end of November (D5 L6) and arrive with four straight away defeats.

Braga Vs Portimonense – Key Facts

  • Braga have claimed eight wins from their last nine league matches, with six by way of a one-goal margin.
  • Portimonense would fail to score in 50% of their 12 away league games this season, losing without scoring on five occasions including on similar trips to Benfica (4-0) and FC Porto (1-0).
  • This will be the sixth meeting in Primeira Liga across the past three seasons, with Braga coming out on top four times and still to lose.

Since promotion to Portugal’s top division in 2017, Portimonense have faced Braga on five occasions and, to this day, are still to be disgraced despite failing to chalk up a win. Braga were victorious in four but all were slender one-goal margins, with the most recent two producing scores of 1-0. Braga By 1 Goal Winning Margin (12/5 PaddyPower) and Braga/Under 2.5 Goals (11/4 Betway) are viable alternatives to backing the hosts at thin odds.
