Brazil Preview – Are hosts Brazil destined for Copa America glory on home soil?

I alluded to Brazil’s inconsistent level of performances in my preview of their quarter-final clash with Paraguay. Having went from drawing 0-0 with Venezuela one game to thrashing Peru 5-0 in the next during the group stage, there was a feeling that this squad were just about finding their feet at this summer’s Copa America. That feeling changed rather quickly as they once again struggled to breakdown a stubborn opponent. Paraguay were fortunate even to make the knockout phase having not won a match in the group stage, but still held Brazil to a 0-0. The format of this competitions means that knockout game draws go straight to penalties. The hosts were able to hold their nerve and reach the semi-final .

It’s the first time Brazil have made it to the last four since 2007. They won the tournament on that occasion and defeated Argentina in the final. It was a comfortable 3-0 win and was also the last time these two nations have clashed in this competition. Brazil and their head coach Tite would very much welcome a repeat of that in Belo Horizonte.

Argentina– Will Argentina reach a third successive Copa American final?

A disappointing defeat in their opening game against Colombia followed be an underwhelming draw against Paraguay looked to have Argentina right up against it in terms of qualification. After the disaster that was last year’s World Cup it’s only natural to expect the worst with this group of players. Somewhat surprisingly, though, Argentina have recovered very well to make it to this stage of the third straight competition. Venezuela were expected to be a really stern test for Lionel Messi and Co but they were in control early on and never looked back. Lautaro Martinez scored his second goal in two games to set his team on their way. The Inter forward has been a real positive this tournament and Argentina’s most dynamic attacker.

There has been no problem for Argentina in recent attempts of reaching the Copa America final. Comfortable semi-final wins against Paraguay and the USA in 2015 and 2016 respectively have ensured they entered the final with great belief only to suffer huge disappointment both times. Expectation and perhaps their on confidence is not what it was either of those times. Could it yet end with their first Copa America success since 1993.

Key-Facts – Brazil v Argentina

  • This is the first meeting between these two sides in the Copa America since 2007
  • Argentina were the only quarter-finalists who won their tie in regulation time and did not require penalties
  • The winners of this will face either Chile or Peru in Sunday’s final

Brazil v Argentina Betting Advice

Brazil are the much more settled and organised of the two teams coming into this semi-final. They have built an identity under Tite but the results must now come – and that means winning this competition. Their hopes were hit with the injury to Neymar shortly before the competition kicked off and it’s games such as their quarter-final where his absence is felt most. Argentina have their star man fit and available and he has captained them in each of their games so far. But Messi has not had the influence we are so used to seeing. All of Argentina will be hoping that this game is where he is at his wonderful best.

It’s over 10 years since these two met in the Copa America which is something of a surprise. Had this game been played a couple of weeks ago then Brazil would be extremely confidence of progressing such were their opponent’s woes. Tite’s men have not coped all that well with the pressure of being hopes and their need to be victorious. Messi and his teammates will look to capitalise on that and have been buoyed by a couple of better performances, and clean sheets to boost.

This has been a competition lacking in goals and with so much spotlight surrounding this encounter it’s likely to be a similar sort of game. All four of Argentina’s games so far have ended with two or less goals scored whilst two of Brazil’s four have been goalless. Under 2.5 goals looks to be a sold wager.
