The Icelandic top flight season recently got underway, and my next pick features the early Urvalsdeild league leaders, Breidablik, taking on Vikingur Reykjavik at their Kópavogsvöllur, with the hosts looking to preserve their unbeaten start to the new domestic season.
The home side have made a solid start to their campaign as they’ve won three of their first four matches of the season with wins over IBV, FH and Keflavik. They also hold a 100% winning record at home, and they’ve won four of their last five on home turf in recent times.
Breidablik have generally held the upper hand over their opponents, Vikingur, as they’ve won four of the last five encounters between the two sides, but they did suffer a 2-1 loss last time they hosted Vikingur, so they’ll seek to avenge that defeat here this evening. Eyjolfsson (3 goals) along with Williumsson and Gudjohnsen (2 goals apiece) have been the most productive so far for the hosts.
Onto Vikingur Reykjavik and they currently occupy eighth place in the Icelandic top flight having won just one of their first four league matches of this new term – that was a 1-0 home win over Fylkir, while they’ve drawn two (Valur 0-0 and Stjarnan 3-3) as well as a 1-0 loss at home to Grindavik last time out.
Away from home, Vikingur have suffered recent defeats at Fjolnir 3-1 and Valur 4-3 but they’ve generally been pretty solid on the road as they’ve lost just twice in their last ten matches on their travels. In addition, the goals have fairly flowed whenever Vikingur have been in town.
9 of Vikingur’s last 10 away matches have resulted in over 2.5 goals with the visitors scoring a total of 21 goals during this sequence, scoring 2 goals or more on eight occasions – with also failing to keep a clean sheet during this period too!
In short, I think we’ll see some goals in this one.
