Brentford failed to take command of the second automatic promotion spot when losing at the weekend and need all three points against a Barnsley team who also require a win for their Championship survival.

Brentford Preview – Can the Bees put Saturday’s disappointment behind them and get back to winning ways?

It’s been a terrific campaign overall and an even better run of form since the resumption for Brentford, but it could yet still mean they fall short of automatic promotion. A frustrating and likely extremely damaging defeat away to Stoke on Saturday meant Thomas Frank’s men were unable to take advantage of West Brom’s own loss the previous evening. Even a point would have meant Brentford would be favourites for second spot heading into this final round of games.

As it is, Brentford will have to win their own game and hope for a favour from QPR who travel to the Hawthorns at the same time. If that doesn’t transpire then Brentford will face the drama of the Championship playoffs.

It was a flawless return up until that point for Brentford who won seven on the bounce after the break, eight if you include the match immediately before. In that time they kept six clean sheets and scored an impressive 20 goals. That consistency and level of form, combined with some stutters from the Baggies, gave new hope that they could finish runners up.

The last time Brentford failed to win a home game was the 22nd of February and the last time they have lost consecutive games in the league was August. So it’s likely they have what to takes to bounce back.

Barnsley Preview – Could Barnsley get all three points and pull off a great escape?

There may still be a long way to go but Barnsley have at least given themselves a chance of remaining a Championship club following a dramatic late winner at home to Nottingham Forest on Saturday. It leaves them two points below safety and knowing that anything less than victory here will mean a straight return to League One. It’s been far from a happy season but Gerhard Struber could yet seal a dramatic escape.

Like Brentford, Barnsley will have to rely on favours from elsewhere and teams above them dropping points if they are to have a happy ending to the campaign.

Unlike their opponents, the last few weeks have been a real grind for Struber’s men. The win over Forest was a first win in five games and just their third in the last 10 games. Wins away from home have been even more difficult to come by which is what they’ll need to tomorrow.

Patrick Schmidt was the hero with his goal in added time against Forest. That was his first goal of the calendar year and just his third of the league campaign as a whole.

Brentford vs Barnsley Betting Advice

There’s no doubt that one of these teams will be disappointed come full-time tomorrow as a draw is going to be of no use for either. It’s even conceivable that both could be feeling sorry for themselves due to needing other results go go their way. Brentford will hope they are on the right side of it just as they were when the teams met earlier in the season – a 3-1 win at Oakwell in September.

Key Facts – Brentford vs Barnsley Betting Tip

  • Brentford need to better West Brom’s result if they are to clinch second spot and automatic promotion
  • A last-minute winner against Nottingham Forest has given Barnsley some hope of staying up
  • It was a comfortable 3-1 win for Brentford when the teams met at Oakwell back in September

Goals have been hard to come by for Barnsley who are the second lowest scorers in the league behind Middlesbrough. Brentford may have been poor in defeat to Stoke but they have been excellent overall and they can do their bit by getting a win, keeping another clean sheet in the process, and relegate the visitors at the same time.
