Brentford – Bees exhibiting no inferiority complex?

Against the backdrop of a raucous capacity crowd inside the Brentford Community Stadium, Thomas Frank’s side host their fourth London derby of the season having already secured useful results against Arsenal (won 2-0 at home), Crystal Palace (1-1 away) and last time out away to West Ham (won 2-1). No team in Premier League history has gone unbeaten through their first four London derbies.

Those outcomes account for seven of the twelve points already earned in this their debut season in the Premier League. That is a tally superior than the likes of Arsenal, Leicester and Tottenham and only four fewer than Chelsea, the reigning European champions and current league leaders. It all serves to emphasis just how impressive their start to life back in the English top-flight has been.

Graham Potter’s Brighton, courtesy of a last-gasp winner, are the only side to condemn The Bees to defeat so far. Even 2019-20 Premier League winners Liverpool came unstuck against the side promoted via the Championship play-offs last season. Jurgen Klopp’s men forced to settle for a share of the points here in West London after twice seeing leads disappear in a 3-3 draw that won’t be forgotten in a hurry.

Chelsea – Blues the king of the capital?

The Blues were the main beneficiaries from the draw at Anfield between title protagonists Liverpool and Man City, as it meant they topped the table heading into the October international break. It is the slenderest of advantages, though, sitting a point clear of Jurgen Klopp’s team who in turn have a host of sides breathing down their neck. By the time kick-off rolls around, though, Chelsea could drop as low as fifth.

This team is accustomed to pressure, however, and may even be the perfect foil to their impressive hosts. Chelsea have won each of their last six away London derbies and could become the first team in any of the English top four divisions to do so seven times in a row. Furthermore, since Thomas Tuchel took over the reigns in January 2021 his team has lost only once in twelve top-flight away matches (W8 D3).

Like Brentford though, Chelsea have tasted defeat the once this season: completely outplayed by Man City who secured a deserved 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge in late September. The Blues responded positively, however, immediately getting back to winning ways before the break with a 3-1 victory over Southampton. Although they did need a couple of late goals to get it done against the Saints’ ten men.

Brentford Vs Chelsea Betting Advice

Stepping up from the Championship to the Premier League has been made to look deceptively easy by Brentford who start the weekend four points off the top of the table in seventh – above a whole host of teams who were expected to finish the season much higher than them. They’ve been terrific viewing, stunning several top sides already including Arsenal and Liverpool at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Brentford Vs Chelsea – Key Facts:

  • None of the last six competitive meetings between the sides were won by Brentford. The Bees were beaten 4-0 the last two times, both in the FA Cup (2013 and 2017).
  • Brentford have avoided losing their first three London derbies in the Premier League but are now facing a Chelsea side which has won its last six such matches on the road.
  • Furthermore, Chelsea boast a formidable record on their travels under Thomas Tuchel, winning eight and losing only one of twelve Premier League away games.

As impressive as The Bees have been, league leaders Chelsea do appear to have their number marked. The Blues have won their last six London derbies away from home and should do what Arsenal and Liverpool could not, which is control proceedings in West London. Under Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea boast eight wins from twelve away league games, keeping six clean sheets in the process and conceding only seven.
