Preview: At the Brentford Community Stadium this Wednesday, Brentford will welcome the reigning Premier League champions for what will be the first competitive meeting between the sides in nearly a quarter of a century. Can the Bees prevent Man City from making it ten successive league wins?

Brentford – Bees to raise their game against another elite side?

For the third time since their promotion to the Premier League, Brentford play host to a side that are widely considered to be among the best three teams in the league. While they are yet to win such a match up, they can take heart from their displays against Chelsea and Liverpool. Unfortunate to lose 1-0 to the former having been the better side, they would earn a memorable 3-3 draw against Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Ahead of Wednesday’s visit of the defending champions, Brentford boss Thomas Frank claimed anything was possible whilst conceding he would have preferred to have had a full strength squad to pick from. His side are in decent form though. Boxing Day’s 2-0 loss at Brighton was only their second in six league games (W2 D2), winning the last two staged here at Brentford Community Stadium against Everton and Watford.

Key Stat: After winning just one of their opening six Premier League home games (D1 L4), the Bees have won each of the previous two in West London. Meanwhile, only Brighton and Chelsea have kept a clean sheet away to Brentford this season.

Manchester City – Pep’s men threatening to run away at the top?

Since sustaining a shock 2-0 defeat at the Eithad to Crystal Palace in late October, Pep Guardiola has overseen a run of nine successive league victories to open up a six point lead atop the Premier League. And while for much of the campaign they were second fiddle to Liverpool’s attack, a staggering 17 goals scored across their last three league fixtures means they are now level with the Reds in the scoring stakes.

Away from home, City remain imperious. The 4-0 rout of Newcastle before Christmas marked win number five in a row outside of Manchester, going unbeaten in their last eight such matches (W6 D2) since a 1-0 reverse at Spurs on the opening weekend. It helps to have a near full compliment of players to choose from, with none in finer form right now than Raheem Sterling with a goal in each of his last four appearances.

Key Stat: Victory at Watford (1-3) on 4 December saw Man City claim their third consecutive away league victory over a promoted side, although they have lost four of their past ten away matches (W5 D1) versus teams from London.

Brentford Vs Manchester City Betting Advice

With several key players missing, this looks a daunting assignment for Brentford who must find a way of stifling a Man City team at full strength, scoring goals for fun lately, and targeting their tenth consecutive win in the competition. Chelsea and Liverpool discovered first-hand, however, that the Brentford Community Stadium is no walk in the park and a similar level of performance is undoubtedly required from the hosts.

Brentford Vs Manchester City – Key Facts:

  • Although the odds are heavily stacked against them, Brentford haven’t lost their final fixture of a calendar year when it was played at home since 2005 (W5 D3).
  • However, Man City have won all of their previous three away league games against promoted sides, scoring 11 and conceding once.
  • Brentford are capable of scoring having done so in six of eight home league games this season, but Man City, with 17 goals in their last three league games, should prove too strong.

As magnificent as Man City have been offensively in recent matches, defensively they were exposed time and again by Leicester last time, conceding three in victory. They had recorded four clean sheets on the spin beforehand, although away from home it is four clean sheets from nine this season. This leads me to believe Brentford, who have scored in six of eight home league games so far, can deny City their Win To Nil.
