Preview: Two of last season’s promoted sides from the Championship meet at the Brentford Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Bottom side Norwich look to have it all to do. Although they would avoid losing both meetings last term, a late Kenny McLean equaliser preserving the Canaries six-match unbeaten away run in this fixture.

Brentford – Bees losing their sting?

After three successive Premier League defeats, games against the division’s bottom clubs could be the ideal tonic for Brentford to rediscover their form from earlier in the campaign which took them up into the top half of the league. As it is, though, they approach fixtures against Norwich and Newcastle either side of the forthcoming international break in 12th place, five points clear of danger.

Thomas Frank has often bemoaned results not matching performances, believing his team have deserved more at times this season, but the Dane could have absolutely no complaints with last week’s 3-1 scoreline at Turf Moor. Three goals down to Burnley inside 36 first-half minutes, the Bees did eventually rally, and Frank may take some comfort from a second half in which they were much improved.

That followed slender defeats at home to Chelsea (0-1) and Leicester (1-2). Meanwhile, since beating Arsenal 2-0 on opening night, Brentford haven’t won a home league in four attempts (D1 L3), after what has been an admittedly tough run of games. On Saturday, against the league’s bottom side, they will be striving to avoid a fourth straight league defeat, having last done so in December 2016 under Dean Smith.

Norwich City – Farke badly in need of a result?

In a week where a manager has lost his job (Nuno Espirito Santo) and another (Ole Gunnar Solskjaer) continues to cling to his, Daniel Farke’s precarious situation in Norfolk has almost slipped unnoticed. Norwich’s woeful start to the campaign (D2 L8) has certainly attracted plenty of attention, but there is now a growing sense that patience is wearing thin and that a change may well be needed to arrest the rot.

Already eight points adrift of safety at the foot of the standings, the Canaries needed last week’s 2-1 loss at home to a Leeds side which had won only once all season beforehand like a hole in the head. A second successive defeat for Farke’s side, which had previously been unbeaten in two following goalless draws with Burnley and Brighton, scoring just three goals all season whilst giving up 25 down the other end.

Their next four games all have winnable vibes to them, however, with home encounters against Southampton and Wolves preceding their trip to St James’ Park to face a Newcastle side directly above them in the table. Before then, Farke badly needs a positive outcome at Brentford. Fortunately, there is precedent, with his Norwich side taking four points from last season’s league meetings in the Championship.

Brentford Vs Norwich Betting Advice

The ground has opened up on Brentford following three successive league defeats, offering crumbs of comfort for Norwich who visit South London this weekend unbeaten in their previous six in all competitions (W3 D3) away to the Bees. In the Premier League, however, the Canaries are without so much as an away goal this season, losing four of five such matches. They’ve lost each of the last eleven in the capital.

Brentford Vs Norwich City – Key Facts:

  • Eight places and ten points separate Brentford in 12th from Norwich in 20th before kick-off, despite Norwich finishing ten points above the Bees in last season’s Championship.
  • Norwich are unbeaten in five versus Brentford (W2 D3) and haven’t lost away from home in this fixture since 2009 in League One (W3 D3 since).
  • Each of the last three meetings in South London saw Norwich, who haven’t scored more than once in their past 28 top-flight matches, net exactly one goal.

Last season Norwich finished ten points better off than Brentford. This seems scarcely believable based on their starts to the season, the latter currently ten points ahead of their opponents coming into this game. Yet I still cannot get on board with the hosts being as short as they are. This fixture is more Norwich’s level, as proven by last season’s results between the pair in the Championship and even beyond that.
