Brentford Preview – Can Bees extend excellent home streak?

For a long time this season the duo of Leeds and West Brom have been competing almost in a league of their own at the very top of the EFL Championship table, with a chasm that is nine points now separating the rest of the division. Brentford (3rd – W13 D4 L9, GF41 GA20) are the nearest pursuers in third, though, after putting together an excellent run of results comprising of four wins from their past six league games, which also includes a very creditable showing at second-place West Brom to earn a 1-1 draw.

The only negative in their recent copybook coming at Millwall before the New Year when suffering the narrowest of 1-0 defeats. Travelling has in fact held them back lately, with only one away success from their past five such matches. However, that was the most recent of the batch – a resounding 4-0 victory at Ashton Gate over play-off rivals Bristol City, which was followed up three days later by progressing into the Fourth Round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 triumph at home to Stoke City.

Confidence high and winning momentum in tow, The Bees now make their way back to fortress Griffin Park seeking a sixth consecutive league victory at home. Reading (1-0), Luton (7-0), Cardiff (2-1), Fulham (1-0) and Swansea (3-1) were all no match for Thomas Frank’s side in West London. Fellow Londoners QPR, who are eight points worse off in fifteenth, could soon join that company. Brentford have eased to victory in each of the last two meetings against The Rs which includes a 3-1 scoreline earlier in the season at Loftus Road.

QPR Preview – New year means new Rangers?

Seeing out December in miserable style with a winless sequence comprising of three defeats and a draw to plummet down the league table, QPR (15th – W10 D5 L11, GF44 GA48) have begun a new year an entirely different beast it would seem. Since the turn of the year Mark Warburton’s men have played only twice but have recorded back-to-back victories whilst plundering an astonishing 11 goals, thrashing Cardiff 6-1 in Championship action before putting Swansea to the sword days later in the FA Cup, running out 5-1 winners.

The Rs have clearly been incredibly ruthless of late although goals have rarely been an issue for them this season. Only West Brom, who have led the way at the top of the table for large parts of this term, have registered more goals thus far than their 44 from 26 league games. Meanwhile, only away to Reading on Boxing Day have they failed to find the back of the net at all in their past eleven Championship fixtures. However, this offensive output has suffered when away from home.

Scoring just 16 times on the road compared with the 28 at home is a noticeable drop-off. Therefore replicating their recent high-scoring endeavours, this time away to capital rivals Brentford whose home form is superb and whom they were beaten convincingly by in this same fixture last season, appears a tall order. Particularly as Rangers will arrive at Griffin Park having won only once on their travels in their previous six attempts (W1 D1 L4), losing each of the last two at Barnsley (5-2) and Reading (1-0).

Brentford Vs Queens Park Rangers – Key Facts:

  • Brentford are on a winning streak of five in the league when at home, with forward Bryan Mbeumo opening the scoring in each of the last four said matches.
  • QPR have notched eleven goals across their recent wins over Cardiff and Swansea (latter in the FA Cup), but are bidding to end a two-game losing away run in the Championship.
  • Each of the previous two league meetings went Brentford’s way, winning 3-1 away earlier in the season and 3-0 at Griffin Park during the 2018/19 term.

Betting Summary

The recent performances from QPR (5/1 Sportingbet) are eye-catching to say the very least, scoring eleven times across their pair of wins over Cardiff and Swansea. The latter, of course, being an FA Cup encounter. In the league, The Rs have one win from five (W1 D1 L3) and have lost four of the last six away from home, which includes the last two. That does contrast rather sharply to the home form of Brentford (13/20 Betway) who are aiming to secure a sixth straight home league win this weekend as they continue their pursuit of the top-two.

QPR’s resurgence means Brentford’s odds are probably about right in the Match Odds market, albeit on the shorter side. The prospect of goals is also difficult to gauge as while this is undoubtedly a meeting between two of the division’s more potent attacks, less than half of Brentford’s home games this season have produced either both teams scoring or three or more goals, while QPR’s scoring output drops considerably when away from home. The price of a home win can be boosted to 8/5 with Betway when coupled with Under 3.5 Goals.
