Brighton Preview – Seagulls targeting league double over Arsenal?

We are now well into March and Brighton (15th – W6 D11 L15) are still searching for their first competitive victory of 2020. Since the turn of the year this team has turned out nine times in the league, drawing on no less than six occasions with one of those being last week’s dour contest at Molineux which ended goalless with Wolves. They are now the only team in England’s top four divisions that hasn’t won a competitive game this calendar year.

Just six Premier League wins all season is a figure worse than all bar bottom side Norwich, meanwhile. On this basis, The Seagulls can consider themselves fortunate to find themselves two points above the relegation zone. One of those rare triumphs did come in the reverse meeting, though, as goals from Adam Webster and Neal Maupay sealed a surprising 2-1 victory in North London last December to extend their unbeaten run versus Arsenal to four (W2 D2).

Therefore, Brighton could complete a memorable league double this weekend, provided Graham Potter’s men end a nine-game winless run in the league. Four of their six victories in 2019-20 were earned at home (W4 D6 L4), with one in particular boding well for their chances here. Back in October the other club from North London, Arsenal’s fierce rivals Tottenham, travelled to The Amex stadium only to be soundly beaten 3-0.

Arsenal Preview – Can Arteta resolve away issues?

Could Arsenal (9th – W9 D13 L6) come to rue the decision by the footballing authorities to postpone their rearranged fixture with Man City? There may not have been a more opportune moment to tackle the faltering Premier League champions, who were fresh from losing a Manchester Derby and may have been eyeing up potential rotation ahead of an intensive period. Not least because The Gunners are in decent shape themselves.

Not since losing at home to Chelsea at the end of December have Arsenal tasted defeat in the league under Mikel Arteta. The Spaniard has overseen both their longest run of consecutive victories – winning the last three games with Newcastle (4-0), Everton (3-2) and West Ham (1-0) – as well as their longest unbeaten sequence (8 games: W4 D4) of the entire season, despite only arriving late last year.

The biggest improvement, however, has undoubtedly been in defence. Three clean sheets in the last four league games is as many as they managed across their opening 18 fixtures, even if the latest, at home to West Ham, was fortunate to say the least. It should be stressed that only one was earned away from home, where this team continues to find life difficult having drawn five straight away league games – four of those score draws – since a 3-1 victory at West Ham on 9 December.

Brighton Vs Arsenal Betting Advice

The beginning of a daunting set of fixtures for Brighton, with five of their next six fixtures against sides in the top-half. Arsenal are the lowest ranked of those, though, making this the home side’s best shot at securing a first win of 2020 for what could be quite some time. However, the away side arrive in by far the better shape when it comes to results in the league, winning three on the bounce and not losing any of their past eight matches.

Brighton Vs Arsenal – Key Facts

  • Brighton are still the only team in the Premier League without a victory in 2020 (D5 L3).
  • Arsenal are the owners of the longest unbeaten run in the Premier League, recording four wins and as many draws across their past eight top-flight matches.
  • A 2-1 victory at Emirates Stadium on 5 December, 2019 extended Brighton‘s fine record over Arsenal to two wins and two draws from their previous four league meetings.

Arsenal were incredibly disappointing in the attacking third of the pitch last week against West Ham, creating very little before snatching a late win. Elsewhere that same afternoon, Brighton were nullifying a potent Wolves attack at Molineux. Factor in how poor The Gunners record is against The Seagulls, with a 2-1 defeat in North London earlier in the season extending their winless run to four meetings (D2 L2), and suddenly this fixture appears fraught with danger for Mikel Arteta’s side.
