Brighton – Seagulls to extend best run of the season?

In spite of the obvious disappointment that comes with conceding a decisive goal with the last meaningful action of the match, Brighton (W5 D10 L8) had been in terrific form prior to Wednesday’s 1-0 loss away at Leicester in the fifth round of the FA Cup. There is therefore every likelihood that another bold showing could be in the offing, from a side enjoying their longest unbeaten league run in almost three years.

The Seagulls are currently five league games unbeaten (W3 D2) – only leaders Man City are on a longer such run at the present time. That run comprises 1-0 wins away to Leeds and, remarkably, reigning champions Liverpool, as well against Tottenham in their latest outing here at the Amex. The latter halting a 14-game winless sequence (D6 L8) in Premier League home games which stretched into last season.

Furthermore, the goal that goalkeeper Roberto Sanchez conceded at Turf Moor in last week’s 1-1 draw with Burnley was the first time the Brighton rearguard had been breached in five league games, with the Colombian previously keeping four consecutive clean sheets. This steeliness to their play has contributed to some low-scoring affairs with Under 2.5 Goals landing in nine of their last eleven top-flight fixtures.

 

 

Aston Villa – Versatile Villans targeting Europe?

Dean Smith’s men are a team completely transformed from the one that stayed up on the final day of last season, to such an extent that a return to European football cannot be ruled out. On their day they can be mesmerising to watch, in particular the burgeoning relationship between attackers Jack Grealish and Ollie Watkins, but they’re just as likely to be seen grounding out three points than blowing teams away.

Last week against Arsenal was certainly a case of the latter. The aforementioned Watkins may have netted inside the opening stages, bringing up his milestone tenth league goal of the season in the process, but it was another resilient defensive display which secured a third win in five league games as Villa (W11 D2 L8) banked their eleventh clean sheet of 2020-21. Only leaders Man City, with 13, have fared better.

Unsurprisingly, 10 out of 11 Premier League victories accrued so far this season were accompanied by a clean sheet, emphasising the growing importance of goalkeeper and defence on said transformation. Meanwhile, six of those wins have come on the road, where their form has taken a noticeable dip, recording only four points across their previous five away matches (W1 D1 L3).

With both sides coming into their meeting on the South Coast having earned 1-0 victories from their latest league outings, a cautious, possibly even tactical affair could be on the cards at the Amex. Brighton’s recent games have all been tight, too, with each of the last six going Under 2.5 and seeing only six goals. Meanwhile, Aston Villa boast more league clean sheets this season than all other sides except Man City.

 

 

This Villa attack, when free-flowing, are capable of notching two or three – or even seven, as was the case against Liverpool back in October – but only managed the one in a 2-1 defeat at home to Brighton in November. That was one of only six occasions in which Graham Potter’s side netted two or more this season, as goals are often at a premium for the Seagulls – which is how I see this encounter unfolding.
