Brighton Preview – Potter’s tinkering the first sign of desperation?

It hasn’t been the easiest of schedules in which to begin the season for Graham Potter’s Brighton. Three of their first seven fixtures were against teams who finished no lower than fifth last term, while in Everton they faced the early frontrunners. It is little wonder therefore that they have struggled for consistency, with a 3-0 victory away to Newcastle in Gameweek 2 their sole success of the campaign to date.

Brighton come into Friday in sixteenth (W1 D2 L4), two points and as many positions above the relegation zone, and so are under pressure even at this early stage. Their next two assignments – at home to winless Burnley followed by a trip to Villa Park to face an Aston Villa side fresh from two league defeats – are nonetheless opportunities to bolster an anaemic points tally before their fixtures stiffen again.

Last time out Graham Potter made some bold choices with regards to his initial line-up. Goalkeeper Matt Ryan lost his place to Roberto Sanchez, a 22-year-old Spaniard making his Premier League debut, while last season’s top scorer Neal Maupay failed to even make the squad. A fourth league defeat in seven was to follow, losing 2-1 in north London to an in-form Tottenham (xG: TOT 2.00 – 0.35 BRI).

Burnley Preview – Sean Dyche no closer to this season’s first win?

The worst start to a Premier League campaign in the club’s history. There is simply no getting away from that fact for Burnley following a fourth league defeat in their opening six matches. It was another worrying performance from Sean Dyche’s side, who were once again found wanting in the creative department, generating a paltry 0.48 worth of xG in last week’s 3-0 loss at Turf Moor at home to Chelsea.

Burnley have now failed to score on four occasions this season, and deservedly sit as low as they do in the table. The Clarets sit bottom of the pile, albeit having played a game fewer than most, and are one of three sides – the others being Sheffield United and newly-promoted West Brom – who are still to register a win in the league in 2020-21. This could change, however, in their upcoming matches.

Following Friday’s outing on the South Coast is a home meeting with Crystal Palace, fixtures that garnered four points last season, before a daunting run of games against Man City, Everton and Arsenal. The need to start picking up points soon is critical, while it should also be noted that the club have been known to come back from poorer spells than this, enduring winless runs of 11 and 8 in two of the past three seasons.

Brighton vs Burnley Betting Advice

There is almost nothing to split them across their previous meetings, with Burnley avoiding defeat in all five Premier League duels (W2 D3) prior to last season’s 2-1 loss in Lancashire. Here on the South Coast, Brighton remain winless in three (D2 L1) since 2017. Neither has done much this season meanwhile to suggest they are capable of winning on Friday, combining for only one win in thirteen league outings.

Brighton vs Burnley – Key Facts:

  • Both teams have found the back of the net in six of the seven Premier League games Brighton (W1 D2 L4) have featured in so far this season.
  • Among three sides without a league victory in 2020-21, Burnley have fired a blank in four of their six fixtures whilst netting a league-low three times.
  • Burnley edge the head-to-head between these sides, though, with two wins to Brighton’s one across their six Premier League encounters. The latest three producing goals at both ends.

Four of their six Premier League meetings produced no more than two goals, however, each of the past three, including the last two held here at The Amex, featured both teams among the goals. Meanwhile no team has scored fewer than Burnley’s three this season, although all three came in away outings in which both teams scored – as has been the case in all but one of Brighton’s top-flight fixtures so far this term.
