Preview: Seventh time lucky? Brighton are still searching for their first ever Premier League victory over Chelsea, after failing to even collect a point in five of the pair’s previous six such meetings. Will Monday’s affair inside The Amex prove any different?

Brighton Preview – Far from ideal opener for Seagulls?

As opening fixtures go, Graham Potter and Brighton have well and truly lucked out. The Seagulls begun last season in scintillating fashion, thrashing Watford 3-0 at Vicarage Road to land their first win on the opening weekend in three attempts since promotion in 2017-18. Doubling that tally against big spenders Chelsea, albeit they’ll be at home inside The Amex, is going to be anything but straightforward.

Brighton have a wretched record against the West London club, losing all but one of six previous Premier League meetings (D1 L5). Last season’s clash at The Amex was the closest they have come yet, though: Alireza Jahanbakhsh’s acrobatic effort six minutes from time earning Graham Potter’s men a deserved 1-1 draw after shading the xG battle (BRI 1.91 – 1.69 CHE).

In fact, London clubs were a particular favourites for Brighton. Across five home matches versus teams from the capital, The Seagulls recorded eight points from fifteen, clinched victories over Arsenal (2-1) and Tottenham (3-1), and were beaten only by Crystal Palace. However, their record at home to last season’s top four (Chelsea, Liverpool, Man Utd and Man City) made for rather more stark reading: PL: 4 W0 D1 L3, GF2 GA12.

Chelsea Preview – Lampard must deliver after significant backing?

If Chelsea fans are rummaging around for positive omens ahead of the new Premier League season, then feast your eyes on this: Opta tell us that on each of the previous two occasions (in 2014-15 and 2016-17) The Blues have begun the season on a Monday, they have subsequently gone on to lift the trophy. And if that doesn’t do much, how about more than £200-million invested on new players?

With greater spending comes more pressure and even greater scrutiny. So the pressure is on for Blues boss Frank Lampard to deliver on the huge outlay made on the likes of Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner. Only some of those mentioned are available for the season opener, with Chilwell and Ziyech both nursing injuries and, according to Lampard, are certain to sit this out.

An even bigger loss, however, might be defender Thiago Silva, another new addition for whom this game comes too soon. That means the same defensive personnel that shipped more away goals in 2019-20 (38 in 19 games) than any other team – level with last place Norwich – at Brighton, which was one of ten occasions Chelsea dropped points on their travels last season (W9 D3 L7) after a 1-1 draw at The Amex.

Brighton Vs Chelsea Betting Advice

Last season, Chelsea were on course to make it six win in six Premier League meetings when holding a 1-0 lead heading into the final ten minutes at The Amex. A 1-1 draw marked a first point for Brighton against the Blues. Nevertheless, it has been the West Londoners who have been well on top, and with no shortage of investment made over the summer, their dominance could be even more profound this season.

Brighton Vs Chelsea – Key Facts

  • No team has won fewer Premier League games in 2020 than Brighton (W3 D9 L6) – though all three said wins arrived after the lockdown (W3 D3 L3).
  • Having gone eighteen consecutive seasons in the English top flight without losing their opening fixture, Chelsea have subsequently lost two of the past three (W1 L2).
  • The 1-1 draw between the sides in last season’s clash at Brighton’s Amex halted a run of five consecutive head-to-head victories for Chelsea.

I definitely feel Chelsea Win & Both To Score has merit. For starters, Chelsea were incredibly porous on the road last term, shipping two goals for every away outing on average. Moreover, None of their defensive reinforcements are available here. Brighton fired blanks in four of their final six home games, but would net in ten of thirteen such fixtures beforehand – including hauls of two and three versus Arsenal and Spurs. Chelsea 3-1.
