Brighton – Visit of Leeds can help halt winless rut?

Graham Potter’s side were renowned last season for an inability to covert encouraging performances into tangible results. So it caught plenty off-guard when they begun the new Premier League season on the front foot. However, since opening with four wins from five, Brighton’s form has tailed off, and rather dramatically, culminating in last Saturday’s 2-0 loss at Villa Park to a previously out-of-sorts Aston Villa.

The Seagulls probably didn’t deserve to lose last time, but they could have few complaints after a poor showing in attack (xG: AST 0.83 – 0.53 BRI). That is now seven league games on the bounce without picking up three points (D5 L2), scoring a paltry five times across this barren spell, since beating Leicester City 2-1 at the Amex on 19 September. A run that has seen them fall to ninth in the table.

Fortunately, struggling Leeds are up next. Brighton boast a near impeccable record in this fixture, winning eight of the past nine league encounters including the last five as hosts, each time without conceding. The Seagulls have been the better team, at least on xG, in four of six home games this season but picked up just two wins, having failed to do so in their last three versus Arsenal, Man City and Newcastle.

Leeds – Whites Raphinha reliance becoming ever more apparent?

Since making his debut in South Yorkshire in October 2020, Leeds have won 18 of 40 Premier League games in which the Brazilian played some part in but none of the six without him. The winger was conspicuously absent last Sunday as the Whites sustained a fifth league defeat of the season, going down 2-1 in North London to Spurs despite Dan James putting them in the lead with his first goal for the club.

Leeds have now won two of twelve top-flight fixtures in 2021-22, with both being against promoted sides (Norwich and Watford). In all but their 1-0 victory at home to Watford did they concede on at least one occasion, while only Newcastle have seen a higher proportion of league games this term feature both teams scoring than Marcelo Bielsa’s team (75%), who are just two points above the drop in 17th.

Getting Raphinha, scorer of five of the team’s twelve league goals thus far, back sooner rather than later has to be a priority then. Bielsa has had to contend without last season’s top marksman, Patrick Bamford, for most of the campaign which would partly explain such an anaemic start to their season term back in the Premier League. Next up Brighton, form whom they have lost eight of the past nine league meetings.

Brighton Vs Leeds Betting Advice

With key players likely still missing and doubts over whether Raphinha will be up to speed in time for Saturday’s long trip down south, the hosts appear worthy of their favourites price tag. Not least because their record in this fixture is exemplary. The Seagulls have won all but one of the past nine head-to-heads between the sides, including both Premier League duels last season (0-1a and 2-0h).

Brighton Vs Leeds – Key Facts:

  • With eight wins in their previous nine league meetings with Leeds, Brighton will be confident of the three points having won all of the last five as hosts without conceding.
  • Only Newcastle United have seen Both Teams to Score deliver more often this season than Leeds (9/12 games). Three of Brighton’s last four home matches went this same way.
  • Neither team enter the fixture in any sort of form, however. Brighton are winless in seven (D5 L2) while Leeds have won one of their last five (D2 L2).

Leeds haven’t so much as scored on five prior visits to Brighton (L5). Even with all their attacking absentees though, the Whites have found a way to score in nine of twelve league games this term, as well as five of six away. That dents the appeal of a Home Win To Nil (13/5 Betfair). Nevertheless, it is the hosts who are fancied to end a seven game winless run at the expense of Marcelo Bielsa’s faltering charges.
