Preview: Two of the Premier League’s in-form sides renew acquaintances down by the English south coast as Brighton, seeking their third league win in a row, welcome Eddie Howe’s Newcastle – on a three-game win streak of their own – to Amex Stadium.

Brighton – Seagulls less reliable by the south coast?

The Seagulls soared down the finishing stretch of the 2021-22 Premier League season, ending it in ninth – securing the club its first top-half finish since promotion in 2017 – after claiming ten of the last 12 points (W3 D1) available to them. That momentum has carried over to the new campaign where a 2-1 victory over Manchester United, inspired by a Pascal Gross brace, saw them earn their first-ever win at Old Trafford.

Brighton have won six and lost one of their last nine league games, a run impressive in itself but all the more remarkable as it consists of victories at Arsenal, Tottenham and Man Utd. Less remarkable, however, was their record at The Amex last term. Only the three demoted sides, plus Leeds, accrued fewer home points last season than Potter’s men, who won just five of 19 (D7 L7) in East Sussex last time round.

Key Stat: Brighton won both their final game of last season (3-1 at home to West Ham) and first game of this season (1-2 away to Man Utd), and can now record three consecutive wins in the Premier League for only the second time.

Newcastle – Magpies still on the up under Howe?

Arguably the most polished performance on Matchday 1 came from Newcastle, who continue to go from strength to strength under Eddie Howe – albeit the former Bournemouth manager is receiving more financial backing than most of his predecessors. The Magpies weren’t ahead until the hour mark but were always in control, limiting a team that scored 73 in the Championship to 0.3 xGF.

Another astute defensive showing will be needed at The Amex, a ground Newcastle are yet to win at in the Premier League (D3 L2). However, with key men fit and firing – Callum Wilson is back amongst the goals while Kieran Tripper looked lively from full-back – it is difficult envisaging this team, which registered the most shots (23) and efforts on target (10) of anyone last week, being kept quiet on the south coast.

Key Stat: Newcastle have won 10 of 15 Premier League games, including each of their last three, since their last drawn encounter, a 1-1 scoreline away at West Ham in February.

Brighton Vs Newcastle Betting Advice

With the confidence that is currently flowing through both changing rooms, anything other than a lively, entertaining contest by the south coast would come as a huge surprise. Brighton are unbeaten in the league for six games (W4 D2), racking up 15 goals and scoring more than once in all but one match. Their last two home encounters saw them put three and four past Man Utd and West Ham, respectively.

Brighton Vs Newcastle – Key Facts:

  • Newcastle United have never won an away Premier League game against Brighton (D3 L2), but would win the most recent encounter between the sides – a 2-1 win at St James’ Park in March.
  • Brighton have lost once in their last nine Premier League games and are unbeaten across the last six (W4 D2), tally 15 goals scored in the latter run.
  • Newcastle boast seven victories in their last nine Premier League games (L2), which includes winning each of their last three, only failing to win matches against Liverpool and Man City in that period.

I’m expecting Newcastle to give as good as they get. Eddie Howe’s men were among the form sides towards the back end of last term and started as they mean to go with a comfortable 2-0 win over newly-promoted Nott’m Forest. They’ve scored in 8 of 10 prior league games, only denied in that time by Liverpool and Man City, netting exactly twice in each of the last three. BTTS also delivered in both league meetings in 2021-22.
