Brighton Preview – One more point will suffice in survival pursuit?

The equation is simple for Brighton (15th – W8 D13 L15), who have climbed six points points clear of the Premier League relegation zone with a 1-1 draw away at Southampton in midweek and now require a point from their final two fixtures to mathematically guarantee another season in the top tier. They can achieve that as soon as Monday, when they take on a Newcastle side already safe whom have lost three games on the bounce.

Neal Maupay coolly slotted his team into the lead on Thursday evening at St Mary’s, though only a resolute defensive performance in the second half ensured them a share of the spoils. A fortunate point, according to Expected Goals: SOU 2.53 – 0.82 BRI. It does, however, mean Graham Potter’s team remain on two wins from seven games following the restart (W2 D2 L3), losing each of the previous three at home.

Those three home losses were all standard, though, coming against Liverpool, Man City and Man Utd. An out of sorts Newcastle, who they drew 0-0 with in the North East back in September, shouldn’t post them nearly as much problems on the South Coast as Brighton look to cap off a mixed campaign by winning their final home encounter. The Seagulls have secured five of eight league wins this season at The Amex (W5 D6 L7).

Newcastle Preview – Magpies at risk of ending successful season with a whimper?

Another season in the Premier League has been assured for quite some time for Newcastle (13th – W11 D10 L15), who are twelve points clear of the relegation places as they gear up for their final two fixtures. Unfortunately, the ease at which they have stayed up has probably been to the detriment to recent results, having slumped to three straight league defeats following a 3-1 loss at St James’ Park to Tottenham on Wednesday.

The defeat to Tottenham also brought an end to their six-game unbeaten home run. Not that the manager seemed too displeased, stating post-match how it was ‘the best we’ve played in a long time’ as his team bossed possession for long periods whilst directing nearly three times as many efforts towards goal than the opposition. It does, however, mean a return of one point from the last twelve available (D1 L3).

Furthermore, The Magpies have now shipped two or more goals in four successive league games. The flip side to that, however, is only in a 5-0 loss away to Man City have Newcastle failed to net themselves in eight top flight matches, having previously been unbeaten in six prior to a recent slump. A return to winning ways might prove tricky without star man Allan-Saint Maximin, though, who picked up a knock in midweek.

Brighton Vs Newcastle Betting Advice

Although performances merited more, this is a Newcastle side free from obligation having already secured its top flight status. The Magpies losing all of their last three games, conceding more than three goals on average. Factor in them losing arguably their standout player in Allan-Saint Maximin, whose dribbling and pace would have seriously troubled this Brighton defence, and the hosts are a good bet.

Brighton Vs Newcastle – Key Facts

  • Two wins in sixteen Premier League games (W2 D8 L6) now for Brighton who host this latest fixture on the back of three successive home defeats.
  • Three defeats on the spin for Newcastle, who were previously six games unbeaten (W3 D3) but are now bidding to avoid a third away loss in a row.
  • Goals have been few and far between during recent Premier League meetings: just four scored across five previous encounters, with this season’s reverse fixture ending 0-0.

Brighton still need at least a point to guarantee survival, even though, realistically, the club are unlikely to be caught by the teams below them. It could be worth chancing both teams scoring, though. Newcastle are still offering up a goal threat, scoring in seven of their past eight league games (five of last six produced both teams scoring), while Brighton have seen both teams net in five of the last eight matches staged at The Amex.
