Brighton – Seagulls growing in stature at Amex?

Shrewd substitutions made the telling difference at Turf Moor as Brighton won their opening game of a Premier League season for only the second time in five attempts with last week’s 2-1 victory against Burnley. The Seagulls needed to come from behind to collect maximum spoils, a feat they managed just once in the previous campaign – ironically against champions Man City.

Consequently, Graham Potter’s side return to their Amex Stadium with their tails up. Brighton last lost a home Premier League game in March, a game they took the lead in only to lose 2-1 to Leicester City. The South Coast outfit subsequently went unbeaten through their final five home fixtures, comprising wins over Leeds, Man City and Newcastle as well as draws with Everton and West Ham.

However, just three of the past thirteen league renewals has been won by the team playing at home. Brighton won one of the three such matches in the Premier League, but settled for a share of the points the last two times with these encounters seeing a miserly three goals. Furthermore, the Seagulls have never before won their first two matches to a top-flight season.

Watford – Sarr taking Hornets far?

The Hornets were as big as 7/2 in places to see off Aston Villa, a team that barely missed out on a top half finish last time around, on the opening week of the new Premier League season. Last season’s Championship runners-up obviously hadn’t read the script though. A 3-2 victory, after leading 3-0 with 67 minutes on the clock, earning Watford a surprising, yet thoroughly deserved, opening day triumph.

Ismaila Sarr had shown glimpses of his quality at this level in 2019-20, involved in nine goals in 22 appearances in a Watford team that finished 19th. He once again showed he belongs at the top with a man of the match showing first time out this season, tormenting Villa full-back Matt Target whose torrid afternoon up against the Senegal international was summed up by his half-time substitution.

By scoring the second last weekend, Sarr now has five goals in his last six league appearances and his sixth overall in the Premier League. Only one was netted away from home, meanwhile, which isn’t at all surprising. Watford’s latest top-flight campaign resulted in them being relegated with the second-worst away points tally in the division (11), having lost their final six away matches.

Brighton Vs Watford Betting Advice

Across the six previous Premier League meetings between these clubs, only one seen more than two goals for an average of 1.33 per-game. All three staged here at Amex Stadium produced Under 2.5 Goals (4/6 BetVictor), the last two resulting in drab stalemates of 0-0 and 1-1 (7/1 and 11/2 respectively, Betfair). On this basis, Draw & Under 2.5 Goals looks a viable option.

Burnley Vs Brighton – Key Facts:

  • Three of the last thirteen league meetings between Brighton and Watford produced a home win, with the last two at Amex Stadium resulting in draws.
  • Goals are usually in short supply in this fixture. One of the six held in the Premier League produced both teams scoring and only one saw three or more goals.
  • Both sides made encouraging starts to the new domestic season though, Brighton winning 2-1 at Burnley and Watford turning over Aston Villa 3-2 at home.

A slightly more appealing alternative is backing both teams not to score. This bet has landed in all but one of their six Premier League tussles – albeit not the most recent among them, a 1-1 scoreline in Brighton. Watford were a far less potent outfit on their travels last season, scoring 25 fewer at 0.89 per game. Meanwhile Brighton’s underlying defensive numbers were some of the best around.
