Bristol City Preview

Having been in command of a top six finish following a string of really important and impressive victories, it’s all gone a bit pear shaped for Bristol City in the last couple of weeks – losing twice and drawing a home game they really ought to be winning. Defeats away to Aston Villa and Sheffield Wednesday are not overly surprising considering the form of those respective teams but dropping points at home to relegation threatened Reading was a body blow on Good Friday. The Robins are now outside of the top six, but the damage could have been a lot worse as they are only a point behind Derby who occupy sixth spot. It means that a playoff finish is still in their own hands should they win on Saturday and Lee Johnson will be desperate for his side to return to winning ways in what represents their most important game since the playoff final back in 2008. Before the defeat to Villa in the middle of the month, City had beaten three of the top seven in the space of four games so there is no doubting that they can compete with the best that the Championship has to offer. The question that is now being asked of them is if they are able to handle the pressure that exists at this stage of the season and comes with expectation.

Derby County Preview

In what seems like a never-ending merry-go-round in the battle for the top six, Derby are the latest club to claim sixth spot and the final place in the end of season playoffs, but only narrowly. Frank Lampard’s men would have been listening in delight at the results coming in of the teams in and around them on Easter Monday but had to wait until virtually injury time to secure the three points they need to take full advantage of those slips. It required a controversial penalty, converted by Harry Wilson, to set them on their way whilst the on-loan Liverpool winger clinched it with his second a few minutes later. It has sparked life into what was a stuttering end to the season for the Rams who looked to be out of contention for the playoffs up until the last fortnight. There was a lot of attention focussed on Derby following the appointment of Lampard and although it’s been a season full of learning, it could yet have a positive ending if County can get the results they need starting with this massive game on Saturday away to Bristol City.

Bristol City v Derby County Betting Advice

Whilst Sheffield Wednesday have a very faint hope of finishing sixth, it looks for all money that it’s a three-way battle for that final playoff spot involving both Bristol City and Derby County, with Middlesbrough currently separating them. None of the three are in great form at the most important stage of the season which makes this game all that more important as one team looks to gain any sort of advantage, they can get in what is going to be a nail-biting end to the regular season. It should also be noted that these two teams both have two testing fixtures to end the campaign where they will be required to pick up points.

It may be something of a cliché but form often goes out the window when it comes to this stage of the season. That’s down to the pressure that is on each game and Bristol City have yet to show they are able to do that as yet. Derby have been more workmanlike than impressive as well and with both managers relative novices, it makes for an intriguing game on Saturday. Ton confuse matters even more, this game pits the team with the worst home record in the top eight against the team with the worst away record. With neither team in a great form – and due to the pressure surrounding the fixture – I am inclined to think this will be a nervy affair with few goals. 14 of Bristol City’s 21 home matches have went under 2.5 goals and that looks like the best bet here.
