Bulgaria Preview – Can Bulgaria make the step up?
Bulgaria, somewhat fortuitously, find themselves in League B after finishing runners-up to League C Group 3 winners, Norway, at the end of the previous Nations League campaign but nevertheless, the hosts enjoyed a solid campaign as they remained unbeaten at home in the group matches.
Victories over Norway and Cyprus in 1-0 and 2-1 wins respectively along with a point in a 1-1 draw with Slovenia were impressive results but subsequent displays in the Euro qualifiers left a lot to be desired as Bulgaria finished second from bottom in Group A, where England romped home.
Bulgaria managed just one win from their last eight matches of the Euro campaign which was a 1-0 home win against Czech Republic, but they’ve managed just one home win from their last seven matches on home soil in all competitions.
Rep Ireland Preview – Can Republic of Ireland dust themselves off?
Republic of Ireland narrowly missed out on automatic qualification for the European Championships as they finished in 3rd place in Group D behind winners, Switzerland, and just three points adrift of runners-up, Denmark, which was down to failing to win any of their last four group matches.
Earlier in the Nations League, Republic of Ireland finished bottom of League B Group 4 with just two points to their name in a group that consisted of winners, Denmark, and 2nd placed Wales, but the Republic performed better in the subsequent Euro qualifiers.
A 2-0 defeat away at Switzerland was no disgrace and was Republic of Ireland’s only defeat during the Euro qualifying campaign, and the Irish picked up solid points on the road in the process at Denmark 1-1 and Georgia 0-0, so they’ll be fairly confident that they can get something from Sofia on Thursday evening as they prepare for their upcoming play-off against Slovakia in the Euro qualifiers in October.
