Preview: A date with Senegal or Equatorial Guinea at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations is on the line inside Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua. Between them, though, Burkina Faso and Tunisia have produced just three wins through eight matches at these finals, possibly hinting at an evenly-fought contest in Cameroon.

Burkina Faso – Stiffest challenge of tournament awaits?

The Stallions were the first team into the quarter-finals. Bertrand Traore divides opinion at Aston Villa. So perhaps it was little surprise we got to see the best and worst of the 26-year-old winger against Gabon in the last sixteen. The former Chelsea man opened the scoring with a sweet strike from outside the box, having earlier struck a post when gifted the opportunity to hand his team the lead from the penalty spot.

In the end, Burkina Faso needed a shoot-out to oust Gabon, who were unbeaten until that point. Ultimately, then, it means they have won only once inside 90 minutes so far this tournament (W1 D2 L1). This despite facing relatively modest opposition thus far in Cameroon, Cape Verde, Ethiopia, and Gabon. Ominously, none of those teams came into these finals ranked higher than Saturday’s opponents Tunisia.

Key Stat: Following their 1-1 draw at the end of extra-time with Gabon in the previous round, Burkina Faso have now suffered only one loss across their past twelve matches (W5 D6), scoring at least once in all but one of these encounters.

Tunisia – Confidence sky-high following Nigeria scalp?

Ravaged by a bout of illness ahead of the last sixteen tie with Nigeria, who had navigated the group stage without dropping a single point. It therefore came as quite the shock when Tunisia – minus their coach who, along with ten members of his squad, was forced to isolate – eliminated the Super Eagles from the competition with a 1-0 win in normal time, courtesy of Youssef Msakni’s speculative long-range effort.

Buoyed by such an outstanding collective display last time, the Eagles of Carthage should welcome back several key players for this a third AFCON quarter-final in their last four appearances. They have been anything but convincing until this stage, though. Qualifying for the knockout rounds with the lowest points tally (3) of all the teams to have qualified, losing 1-0 to Mali and Gambia but easing past Mauritania 4-0.

Key Stat: Just one of Tunisia’s previous twelve internationals finished in a draw at the end of normal time (90+ minutes), while only four of their last 19 saw both teams score.

Burkina Faso Vs Tunisia Betting Advice

Despite stringing together an inferior record at this tournament to their last eight opponents, it is Tunisia who are considered the most likely to progress without the need for extra-time or penalties. The Eagles of Carthage are 11/8 to win inside 90 minutes, with Burkina Faso a best-price 11/4 to repeat their 2017 Africa Cup of Nations victory over Tunisia at this same stage of the tournament.

Burkina Faso Vs Tunisia – Key Facts:

  • Saturday’s meeting with mark the fifth between the countries, with precisely half of their previous encounters ending in a draw at the end of normal time.
  • Burkina Faso would emerge victorious from the pair’s most recent tussle, however, and will be aiming to repeat their 2-0 victory at this same stage of the tournament in 2017.
  • Tunisia have scored Under 1.5 Goals in three of four tournament matches so far. Burkina Faso, meanwhile, have netted exactly one goal in all four of their encounters to date.

Tunisia clearly rose to the challenge last time, upsetting Nigeria who had looked mighty impressive until that point. However, they’ve not entirely set the tournament alight, with four of their five goals coming in their 4-0 rout of Mauritania. Likewise Burkina Faso, whose sole victory (excluding extra-time) was against Cape Verde. With neither presenting a strong enough case, playing safe with the draw makes sense.
