Preview: Turf Moor last witnessed a Premier League win for Burnley in January, with their current run of fourteen top-flight games without winning there the longest in the club’s history. It is a run Brentford will be determined to prolong on Saturday, however, as the Bees look to avoid a third successive defeat in the competition.

Burnley – Cornet’s goals the only positive in a dim season?

For the fourth time in their top-flight history, Burnley have gone the first nine league games to a season without recording a win. Sean Dyche was at least satisfied with the overall performance in last week’s 2-2 draw with Southampton, despite his team comfortably losing the xG battle (2.14 to 0.79) at St Mary’s. The Clarets, who have picked up four of a possible 27 points so far, remain third from bottom.

One player in particular has clearly made a difference of late, though, and that is Maxwell Cornet. Signed from French side Lyon in the summer, Cornet is extremely versatile in that he can play a variety of positions on the pitch. But we also now know that he is a goalscorer, which is something Burnley, with the second-lowest goal return in the Premier League this term (7 in 9 games), sorely need.

Cornet netted a brace last time out to take his tally to three in as many Premier League starts, having also scored the equaliser in another 2-2 scoreline last month, doing so away at Leicester. In fact, his goals have been worth two points to Burnley which is half their total. So they would be much worse off without his contributions. He will hope to inspire them to their first win at Turf Moor since January (D7 L7).

Brentford – Depleted Bees will travel well?

Hearing Thomas Frank bemoan his team’s apparent hard luck is becoming a regular occurrence these days. Playing well without getting their just rewards is quickly becoming their thing. As was the case in their last two league outings, when losing narrowly to Chelsea and Leicester City despite being the better team, and winning the xG battle, on both occasions. Perhaps they are the new Brighton?

The Danish manager has more reason to complain this weekend, though, should his team fail to secure any points for the third league game running. Brentford could be missing as many as nine players for the trip to Lancashire, many of whom are regular starters. In midweek the club confirmed the news that goalkeeper David Raya, who had enjoyed a strong start to the campaign, would be out for around five months.

No top-flight player has hit the woodwork more often this season than Bryan Mbeumo, who has often been deployed alongside Ivan Toney in attack. That is set to change on Saturday, however, the 22-year-old Frenchman rated doubtful. While this is far from ideal, the Bees can take heart from the fact they are still to lose a Premier League away game (W2 D2). Remaining unbeaten in the last ten away league games.

Burnley Vs Brentford Betting Advice

Just a fifth competitive meeting between the clubs this century. Burnley won each of the four previous, though, including home and away when the sides were last in the Championship together in 2015-16. However, a lot has changed since then. Like Brentford having taken to the Premier League incredibly well so far. They sit 12th, six places and eight points better off than their hosts at Turf Moor this weekend.

Burnley Vs Brentford – Key Facts:

  • Brentford’s superb start to life in the Premier League has hit the buffers lately, losing each of the last two. They are unbeaten on their travels so far, however (W2 D2).
  • Burnley’s season, by contrast, has yet to really get going after failing to win any of the first nine league games (D4 L5). They last won a home Premier League game in January (D7 L7 since).
  • However, the Clarets do boast the record for having won all of the last four meetings in all competitions. Most recent among them when they were in the 2015-16 Championship.

Winless in the league since April. No win here at Turf Moor since January. Although Brentford are missing players, it remains difficult placing any faith in Burnley capitalising on the visitors misfortune on current form. Both teams have drawn half their respective home and away fixtures this season (two apiece). With Burnley struggling in general and Brentford lacking personnel, a point may not be a bad result for either side.
