Burnley – Can the presence of supporters galvanise Clarets?

It is now nine consecutive Premier League home games without a win (D5 L4), since coming from 2-0 down to beat Aston Villa 3-2 in January, after losing 4-0 to Leeds last Saturday. The club’s longest ever winless run at home in the top-flight. The hope, however, will be that 3,500 supporters inside Turf Moor can inspire them to a long overdue victory – against an opponent they’ve not had much luck against.

The Clarets (W10 D9 L17) have fared miserably in this fixture, winning one and losing five of the six previous Premier League meetings with Liverpool at Turf Moor. They were unable to breach the Reds’ backline in three of those, including last season’s 3-0 defeat, but will be more bullish about their prospects on this occasion. Burnley have only failed to find the back of the net in one of their last ten league games.

Yet their overall form is patchy, to say the least, having collected just six points from the last 21 available (W2 L5). Sean Dyche, who has done tremendously well to ensure a sixth successive season in the Premier League next term, has seen his team beaten in each of the last three played here at their residence in Lancashire, going down 2-1 to Newcastle and West Ham prior to Leeds running riot over the weekend.

Liverpool – Top-four hopes hinge on another away victory?

In a season deprived of a meaningful title race or a bruising relegation scrap, we are left with the drama of a top-four tussle that, because of the intervention of a goalkeeper, is set to go right down to the final day. That is unless Liverpool (W18 D9 L9) fail to capitalise on their lucky escape at The Hawthorns last time, where a superb, last-gasp headed winner from Alisson spared their blushes in a 2-1 win over West Brom.

Now, ahead of the crunch meeting later that same night between the teams in third and fourth, Jurgen Klopp’s side can return to the top-four for the first time since the middle of February with a fourth straight win on Wednesday. That they are facing Burnley, a side they have beaten on five of their six Premier League visits to Turf Moor, should only add to the growing belief that a dire season can yet be salvaged.

Furthermore, the Reds are much more dependable on their travels. That win at West Brom – as fortunate as they were to achieve it – made it six away games unbeaten, winning five. Leeds were the last host to deny them the win, requiring a late goal of their own to do so. Although with an inexperienced centre-back pairing, banking on a second clean sheet in seven league games appears speculative.

Burnley Vs Liverpool Betting Advice

During the last round, Burnley were soundly beaten 4-0 at home by Leeds to stretch their winless run at Turf Moor to nine (D5 L4) while Liverpool secured the latest of late wins at already relegated West Brom, courtesy of a goal from their goalkeeper. In truth, the former were unfortunate to be on the wrong end of such a drubbing whereas the latter toiled for much of their encounter at The Hawthorns.

Burnley Vs Liverpool – Key Facts:

  • Liverpool boast an imperious record away to Burnley, winning five of the six Premier League meetings here at Turf Moor. The anomaly a 2-0 loss in August 2016.
  • Following last Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Leeds, Burnley are now winless at Turf Moor in nine Premier League home matches (D5 L4).
  • Goalkeeper Alisson netted a 94th minute winner in Sunday’s 2-1 victory away to West Brom, a result which extended Liverpool‘s unbeaten away run to six matches (W5 D1).

Momentum is undoubtedly with the visitors, seeking a sixth win in seven away outings (D1). The Reds’ record here is also excellent, with five wins from six prior visits. However, Liverpool will once again have a makeshift defence, which is a worrying prospect ahead of facing a Burnley team that has scored in nine of the last ten Premier League games. Therefore, an away win without a clean sheet appeals.
