Preview: With a four point lead atop the Premier League, Pep Guardiola’s Man City are firmly in the driving seat as far as the race for the title is concerned. So will Sean Dyche’s Burnley, conquerors of reigning champions Liverpool as recently as ten days ago, be able to repel the league leaders at Turf Moor?

Burnley – Clarets rarely blunted in Lancashire?

Surprisingly, for a team which had been in fine form beforehand with successive league wins over Aston Villa and Liverpool, the display from Burnley (W6 D4 L10) in the 2-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday was much more limp than I think anyone expected. Their only attempt of the game wouldn’t arrive until the 94th minute, and that it failed to find the target summed up a bitterly disappointing afternoon.

Sean Dyche lamented how there will be days such as those at the weekend, but it is about how the team responds t adversity. Back at Turf Moor, the Clarets will hope to do just that having lost only one of their past six league games at their Lancashire residence. That, however, coming against the other side from Manchester, succumbing 1-0 to Man Utd three weeks ago following a deflected Paul Pogba strike.

That aforementioned loss to the Red Devils remains the only blemish for Burnley across their past four home matches in the Premier League, previously recording narrow victories over Sheffield United and Wolves while more recently clawing back 1-0 and 2-1 deficits to beat this season’s surprise package, Aston Villa. The United contest also represents their only blank at home in the last six such matches (W4 D1 L1).

Manchester City – Miserly Citizens in ominous form?

Perhaps the least surprising aspect from the weekend’s top-flight action was Man City (W13 D5 L2) not merely beating bottom club Sheffield United but doing so without conceding, something they have now achieved in 11 of their past 13 matches in the competition. It was a club record twelfth consecutive win across all competitions, which begs the question how anyone dares stops them on current form.

We may have our answer as recently as this Sunday, when the Citizens head to Anfield to take on defending champions Liverpool, but until then the 2017-18 and 2018-19 winners must ensure their four-point lead atop the table remains intact by not slipping up in Lancashire. With seven successive victories over Burnley, including each of the last three away from home, is there anything to worry about?

The loss of Kevin de Bruyne wasn’t so keenly felt in City’s latest away encounter, thumping West Brom 5-0 a week ago, however, clear-cut chances were at a premium last time and a similarly stoic rearguard will likely await here. Another patient performance may be required. It is also worth noting how City have not scored more than one goal in six of their nine away league games this season.

Burnley Vs Manchester City Betting Advice

Following the highs sustained from beating Aston Villa, twice coming from behind to earn a 3-2 win, and Liverpool, when becoming the first visiting team to win at Anfield in an eternity, it was perhaps to be expected that Burnley would run out of steam sooner rather than later. Sunday’s meek display at Chelsea was just that. Meanwhile, losing top scorer Chris Wood to injury added further insult to, well, injury.

Burnley Vs Man City – Key Facts:

  • Six of Burnley‘s nine Premier League home games so far produced no more than two goals, while six of Man City‘s nine away league games went Under 2.5 Goals.
  • Man City are the only side to have allowed fewer goals to the opposition in home Premier League games this season than Burnley (8 conceded in 9 home games).
  • Burnley‘s one and only home win in this fixture was a 1-0 triumph in March 2015; they have since lost four of five meetings at Turf Moor.

Man City boast the leanest defence on the continent right now, keeping five consecutive clean sheets in the league, all in wins, and conceding only twice across their last thirteen fixtures in the competition. However, more often than not they have struggled for goals themselves on their travels, netting no more than once on six of nine away outings, while only City boast fewer goals conceded at home than Burnley‘s nine.
