Burnley – Solid foundations behind recent resurgence?

In the early part of the season Burnley (W4 D4 L7) fans could have been forgiven for wondering where their next league win would come from. After opening with a seven game winless sequence, the Lancashire outfit had more goals (3) than points (2) at that stage, with both figures an indication that the club were enduring their worst ever start to a Premier League season. Now, though, it all seems a distant memory.

Burnley begin Tuesday’s contest by no means out of trouble, sitting six points clear of danger in 16th, but with renewed belief and confidence abound following four wins and two defeats across their last eight league matches. Meanwhile, if we were to exclude the customary 5-0 loss away to Man City, the Clarets have conceded just three in their last seven top-flight fixtures, banking no fewer than five clean sheets.

Turf Moor has played a role in the team’s reversal in fortunes, even if fans are no longer in attendance. Burnley are unbeaten in four home games, registering wins over Crystal Palace, Sheffield United and Wolves whilst drawing with Everton. They now have the chance to make it three straight home wins for the first time since January 2017, albeit against an opponent they have beaten here once in six attempts (W1 D1 L4).

Manchester United – Martial key to unearthing goals in Lancashire?

Opportunity beckons for Man Utd (W10 D3 L3), who will move above Liverpool at the top of the table ahead of their mouthwatering clash at Anfield next Sunday should they come away from Turf Moof with at least a point. Bearing in mind United are unbeaten away to Burnley in five (W4 D1) and are the only remaining unbeaten side on the road this season, their return to the Premier League summit seems inevitable.

Stranger things have happened though, with this season in particular throwing up its fair share of unpredictable outcomes. While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will know first hand what Burnley are capable of, having lost at Old Trafford to Sean Dyche’s side last January. The Norwegian would also signal his intent over the weekend when fielding a weakened side for the slender 1-0 FA Cup third round victory against Watford.

There was no Harry Maguire, Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford or Anthony Martial on Saturday, rested with this and Sunday’s games in mind no doubt. The latter in particular could be key to any potential success: Martial has scored in all three league appearances against Burnley at Turf Moor, netting the all important opening goal on each occasion. That includes last season’s 2-0 romp.

Burnley Vs Manchester United Betting Advice

Whereas Sean Dyche named a surprisingly strong side for Saturday’s FA Cup encounter here with MK Dons, which required a last-gasp leveller before some goalkeeping heroics from Will Norris to prevail on penalties, his opposite number, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, opted for rotation as Man Utd laboured to a narrow win over Watford. Both will be at full-strength on Tuesday for a fixture which has undoubtedly favoured the visitors.

Burnley Vs Manchester United – Key Facts:

  • Unbeaten in their last four Premier League home games, Burnley are attempting to register a third consecutive home win in the competition for the first time since January 2017.
  • All seven Manchester United away wins this season came after conceding the first goal, drawing the only instance whereby they scored first (2-2 vs Leicester).
  • Since a 1-0 win in the pair’s very first Premier League meeting, Burnley are without a win at home to Manchester United in five attempts (D1 L4).

Man Utd have won to nil on their last four visits to Turf Moor, while all six top-flight meetings there have gone Under 2.5 Goals. This season has seen them invariably find ways to concede, though, doing so in all eight away matches, but have often scored their way out of trouble with an average of 3 per away game. However, Burnley run a tight ship at home, seeing their fixtures in Lancashire return a league-low 1.7 goals.
