Burnley Preview – Can Clarets follow up gritty Anfield point?

There will be a spring in the step of the hosts ahead of Wednesday’s European tussle with sixth-placed Wolves. Not only are Burnley (9th – W14 D8 L13) in terrific form, losing one of their last thirteen top-flight games with that sole defeat coming away to Man City, but they can take a tremendous amount of heart from Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Anfield after becoming the first visiting team in 2019-20 to avoid defeat away to Liverpool.

In truth, it was a fortuitous point on Merseyside, withstanding a barrage of attacks from those wearing Reds for sustained periods. A hard-fought and determined point all the same: a typical Burnley triumph if you like, despite not actually winning. However, had second-half substitute Gudmundsson’s late effort not rattled the woodwork, Burnley might have departed with a famous victory for all their plucky endeavour.

The five conceded at the Etihad remain the only occasion this Burnley defence has been breached on more than one occasion in thirteen Premier League games (W7 D5 L1), a run comprising seven clean sheets – three of which coming across their current six-game unbeaten home run at Turf Moor (W3 D3). The last team to inflict a home defeat on Sean Dyche’s men? Wolves’ Midlands rivals Aston Villa on New Year’s Day.

Wolves Preview – Nuno’s men to kick-on from comfortable Everton success?

In a big boost to their chances of qualifying for next season’s Champions League, Wolves (6th – W14 D13 L8) secured maximum points with a straightforward 3-0 win at home to a lacklustre Everton on Sunday as Nuno Espirito Santo’s men emphatically halted a run of two straights league defeats. Next up is a trip to Turf Moor where an in-form Burnley, who won this same fixture 2-0 last season, could pose them a few problems.

In fact, Wolves have only won one of the pair’s three Premier League meetings (W1 D1 L1) since returning to the top tier in 2018-19. They last won at Turf Moor, meanwhile, back in 2010, losing on two of three subsequent visits. Therefore a stern examination of their top-four credentials can be expected – one that a team boasting one of the strongest records away from home this season (W7 D6 L4) are capable of passing.

Wanderers were, however, downed on their most recent away outing as they saw a point slip from their grasp after conceding with virtually the last action of their contest with Sheffield United. Prior to that, though, they were unbeaten on their travels in five (W4 D1) and had reeled off three straight wins at Tottenham, West Ham and Aston Villa. They’ve also now kept a clean sheet in eight of their last eleven league fixtures.

Burnley Vs Wolves Betting Advice

Since their return to the Premier League in 2018-19, Wolves have met Burnley three times. The pair sharing a win apiece prior to this season’s clash at Molineux ending in a share of the spoils after a 1-1 draw, while all three encounters ended Under 2.5 Goals. So there is enough evidence to suggest this latest renewal could be another cagey affair, particularly with so much on the line for both.

Burnley Vs Wolves – Key Facts

  • The Clarets have suffered just one Premier League defeat in their last thirteen matches in the competition (W7 D5 L1), keeping seven clean sheets.
  • Wolves have lost two of their last eleven Premier League games (W6 D3 L2), keeping eight clean sheets during this time.
  • None of the previous three league meetings since the start of last season contained more than two goals, with this season’s meeting at Wolves ending 1-1.

Burnley may have conceded last time out at Anfield but to only concede once, to a team that had squatted aside all comers previously, has to fill a defence boasting seven shutouts in twelve league games with enormous belief. Wolves won’t be short of confidence at the back either, having kept a clean sheet in eight of their previous eleven top flight fixtures. Under 2.5 Goals is short at 8/15 (Bet365), so back a second successive stalemate instead.
