Burton Albion Preview – Will Jake Buxton get off to a winning start after taking over in the summer?

There’s been a lot of change at Burton over the summer months with long-serving boss Nigel Clough stepping aside as the club attempts to deal with the impact of the current situation. A legend at Burton, Clough had been in charge for five years in his second spell having previously been a coach in some capacity for 11 years between 1998 and 2009. The club have attempted to use the same model again by appointing Jake Buxton in a player-manager role.

Buxton played 24 times in the league last season so it will be interested to see how he combines both roles in what is a trying time for everybody at the moment.

The club has seen a huge turnover of players during the summer and they will likely have to strengthen if they are to be competitive at the top of the table which was their aim under Clough.

Buxton also has the unenviable task of trying to continue the club’s excellent recent record in this competition. Burton memorably reached the last four back in 2018/19 only to lose heavily to Manchester City and were in the quarter-finals last season only for Leicester to get the better of them. This is the first step in what they hope will be another fruitful cup run.

Accrington Stanley Preview – Can Accrington win their first EFL Cup tie since 2017?

Although a fellow League One team, Accrington have been operating at a different level than Burton for the majority of recent times and it’s to their credit they are now seen as something of an established club following promotion in 2018. John Coleman is the main reason for recent successes having been in charge for six years this month. This represents his second spell in charge and he’s led the team to 14th and 17th in their two seasons at this level.

Despite that, their aim again this season will be to stay in the league when the campaign begins next week.

Accrington do not have the same fond memories in this competition as their opponents and they are looking to get past the first round for the first time in three years. Stanley have been comprehensively beaten by Mansfield and Sunderland in the last couple of years and looking to make amends in this game.

Much of Accrington’s success in the coming season will rest on the shoulders of Colby Bishop and Dion Charles. The forwards combined for 18 goals in the league last season – a very good return for two players who are at this level for the first time.

Burton Albion vs Accrington Stanley Betting Advice

This will be the first of two meetings in September between these clubs as they clash again in the second league games of the season. Accrington held the upper hand in the games last season, taking four points from the two matches but Burton are unbeaten against them when at home since 2012.

Key Facts – Burton Albion vs Accrington Stanley Betting Tip

  • Burton have reached the semi-finals and quarter finals of this competition in each of the last two seasons
  • Following promotion in 2018, Accrington have established themselves in the third tier of English football
  • This will be the first of two meetings between the clubs as they clash again in the second game of their league campaigns

As always the disclaimer in these sort of games is that there are so many unknowns but we do know that Burton clearly target this competition. In the last 14 EFL Cup ties Burton have played they have lost just four. Two against Manchester City, once against Leicester and the other Manchester United.

A home tie against a team in this own division is well within their capabilities and I’m taking them to progress. The selection is a home win.
