Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink was brought back to take charge of Burton for a second time with the sole objective of keeping the club in the league. His first spell lasted just over a year and came to an end in December 2015 so it was a surprise to see him return back in January of this year. At the time the club were struggling and had won just two of their first 21 matches.
Hasselbaink has overseen a significant improvement, helped by being able to strengthen the squad during the winter transfer window. In the 22 games since, Burton have lost only six, which for a team who were fighting relegation is more than solid form. They’ve won 12 league games in that time and now find themselves in 17th place and nine points clear of the relegation zone.
Burton’s ability to score goals is one of the key differences between them and the teams around them. Their tally of 55 goals is the most of any of the bottom 10 clubs. It sounds so obvious but shows you the difference it makes when you’re down the bottom end.
The man responsible for 13 of them is striker Kane Hemmings. This is his first season at the club and his contribution has been significant.

Fleetwood also saw fit to change the manager during the season with Joey Barton leaving the club after three years in charge. The experienced Simon Grayson has been in charge since February and it’s been another successful switch as Fleetwood have risen up the table and found more consistency.
There was an outside chance of the playoffs up until the middle of April when back to back defeats against Hull and Crewe essentially halted any hopes of them reaching the post-season. Fleetwood did recover with a 1-0 win over Doncaster at the weekend but they remain nine points behind Blackpool and it’s all about getting as many points as possible to finish as high in the league as they can.
