Preview: Surprise La Liga leaders Real Sociedad could find themselves dislodged from the summit prior to Sunday’s mid-afternoon kick-off in Cadiz. However, a sixth successive victory would ensure Imanol Alguacil’s high-flying charges finish the week still on their perch.

Cadiz Preview – Hunt for maiden home win goes on?

There aren’t many instances this season where Cadiz have walked off at the end of a game feeling as though they were second best, but this was certainly true of their trip to the Wanda Metropolitano to face Atletico Madrid a fortnight ago. In what was their final encounter before a two week break owing to a spate of internationals, the 2019/21 Segunda Division runners-up were resoundingly beaten 4-0.

Unsurprisingly, that aforementioned loss represented their heaviest of the season to date, losing 2-0 in both halves. Given the quality of the opposition in question, as well as it being only their third loss in nine league games (W4 D2 L3), we can forgive them a rare bad day at the office. Their exceptional start to life back in Spain’s top tier, perched in sixth, also means they are able to absorb such a result.

The Andalusians do tend to be at their most productive on their travels, though, registering wins in each of their first four away outings, all without conceding a goal, prior to facing Atletico. Those teams being Athletic Bilbao, Eibar, Huesca and, remarkably, Real Madrid. Conversely, they are still searching for their first win at home, scoring only twice in four such fixtures (D2 L2).

Real Sociedad -1.5 (Asian Handicap)

Real Sociedad Preview – La Real seeking to consolidate top spot?

The last time La Real had 20 points at this stage of a season, as they do now, was nearly forty years ago, in 1981/82, which just so happens to be the year they were last crowned Spanish champions for a second time. So the precedent for a title change is apparent therefore, if you believe in quirky parallels and all that, with odds of 33/1 about a third league title materialising in 2020/21 still readily available.

Certainly, if the players can maintain such a high level of consistency, they would give themselves every chance of producing a remarkable feat. One loss through nine rounds, returning six wins and plundering more goals (20) than anyone, is to be admired, however, the strength of their schedule needs to be factored in having faced just one side – defending champions Real Madrid (0-0) – who finished above them last term.

Early form can work to their advantage, though, and the momentum behind the Basque outfit is gathering pace after five consecutive La Liga wins. Head coach Imanol Alguacil, who now has former Man City midfielder schemer David Silva to call upon, has overseen two-goals margins in all six victories thus far, seeing his defence deny the opposition from scoring on four occasions including in two of three away wins.

Cadiz Vs Real Sociedad Betting Advice

Two of Spain’s biggest surprise packages this season meet for the first time in La Liga since 2005/06, when La Real collected four points after following up a 2-0 home success by earning a 2-2 draw in Cadiz. Fifteen years later and the clubs renew acquaintances whilst occupying positions in the top half of Spain’s top division, with Cadiz six points back in sixth place from surprise leaders Real Sociedad.

Cadiz Vs Real Sociedad – Key Facts:

  • Sixth placed Cadiz have enjoyed a stellar return to La Liga, registering four wins in nine league outings – however, all four victories were accrued away from home (D2 L2).
  • Table-toppers Real Sociedad, who are bidding to win a sixth consecutive league game, have secured all six La Liga victories in 2020/21 by a margin of 2+ goals.
  • Sunday marks a first La Liga meeting between the clubs since the 2005/06 season, with Real Sociedad (W3 D3) unbeaten across six previous head-to-head encounters.

The story of Cadiz is terrific but is unlikely to be sustainable, with Infogol implying their performances so far (0.9 xGF & 1.2 xGA) warrant that of a mid-table side. On the other hand, Real Sociedad rightly sit atop La Liga, possessing the best process in the league (2 xGF & 0.9 xGA). The latter have won six of their seven league games to date, including all of the past five, and should have too much quality.
