You have to go back to the 4-2 win at home to Torino for the last time Cagliari picked up three points in Serie which was at the end of June. They have since went five matches without a win and that run has left them with no chance of qualifying for Europe – which was still a realistic aim when football returned in Italy. Now, they are 12 points behind sixth placed Napoli and the best they can hope for is a top-half finish.
That will be hugely disappointing for Walter Zenga who only took charge of the team back in March and has a talented squad of players at his disposal.
Zenga arrived at the club following the sacking of Ralando Maran who – despite overseeing a very strong start to the campaign – went 13 matches (12 in Serie A) without a win in all competitions. A run which ultimately led to his sacking having been backed significantly in the transfer market.
As it is now, Cagliari have won only two of their last 20 games. When you think that they are actually only a dozen places behind sixth spot, it indicates two things. Just how good the first part of their season was which lead to all the excitement. But more aptly, just how terrible they have been in recent months.

It looked like Sassuolo were not only on for a fifth straight win to increase their chances of qualifying for Europe next season but also record a famous win over the eight, likely soon-to-be nine, in a row champions Juventus. They were two goals down early on at home to Juve only to mount and incredible comeback and take the lead in the second half. They were unable to hold out, though, and it makes a top six finish that bit more difficult.
The biggest picture is that it’s another excellent performance from this Sassuolo team who are the form team in Italy behind Atalanta. Their style of play is also so refreshing and enjoying to watch.

The top four clubs are the only teams to have scored more than their 62 goals in the league so far and the way in which they’re playing at the moment they could add plenty on top of that in their remaining five matches.
They need victories as well if they are to finish in the top six. Currently in eighth, Sass are six points behind Napoli but as that rival have already qualified for the Europa League via the Coppa Italia, seventh placed could yet result in qualification.
