One of Canada or the USA can take a big step towards qualifying for this year’s World Cup with a victory as the top two in CONCACAF qualification go head to head in Hamilton on Sunday.

Canada Preview – Can unbeaten Canadians gain an important three points and continue their quest to Qatar 2022?
With five games left of qualification, Canada are in pole position to make it to their first World Cup finals since 1986. That remains their only appearance on the biggest stage but there is a sense that this could be their year. The Canadians remain unbeaten in the section following the excellent 2-0 win away to Honduras last time out. Their record stands at five wins and four draws, giving them a one point lead over second place, which happens to be their next opponents and near neighbours.
Perhaps more importantly they are five points clear of fourth placed Panama, and with the top three qualifying automatically it is a significant cushion now we’re by the halfway stage of the campaign.
This is their penultimate home match of the section and the only time they have dropped points was against Honduras in the first match of this phase. Considering that opponent have picked up only three points and yet to win a game shows how far Canada have progressed since. No nation has scored more than them to this point either, with 15 goals in nine games.
The strike duo of Jonathan David and Cyle Larin lead the scoring charts with four goals apiece and it is them two leading the charge with the experience of Atiba Hutchinson in midfield also showing his importance.
USA Preview – Will the States have enough to win and go above their opponents?
This campaign has not been without it’s struggles for USA but they are doing just enough to ensure that they have qualification in their own hands. Gregg Berhalter was brought in after the USA failed to qualify for the last World Cup back in 2018 and his sole objective was to guarantee their spot at this year’s finals. The States would go top with a win here and come into this match on the back of a narrow – but vitally important – win at home to El Salvador.
It is their third win in four games and they have taken 10 points in that time. The response has been good following what remains their only defeat in the campaign, a 1-0 loss in Panama.

This is one of three away games left for USA and they all look tricky. The States will have to travel to Mexico and Costa Rica, both of whom harbour hopes of qualifying as well. As such, getting a result here and picking up wins in their remaining home games against Panama and Honduras look like being very crucial to their chances of a top three finish.
Ricardo Pepi and Brenden Aaronson are two of the European contingent in this squad and provide some of the USA’s threat along with star man Christian Pulisic of Chelsea.

Canada are the unlikely leaders at this stage of qualifying and a win here would put them within touching distance of a first World Cup in 36 years. USA have not been all that impressive in qualification but they still don’t lose many and know that they can take control of qualification if they are to get three points.
