It’s a straight shoot-out between second placed Cardiff City and third placed Fulham for the right to join Championship title holders, Wolves, into the Premier League, and with both clubs having come so far, neither of them will want to extend their season and be involved in the play-off lottery.
It seems to be advantage to Cardiff though as The Bluebirds are at their Cardiff City Stadium to take on strugglers Reading with the home side looking to record back-to-back wins following last week’s 2-0 away win at Hull City.
Cardiff bounced back with this win after a 3-1 loss at Derby County, and they are on a strong run of form on home turf as they’ve won eight of their last nine amidst an overall record of 16-3-3 40/16 as Neil Warnock seeks another promotion up to the top flight.
Reading are one of five clubs that have to go to the last day of the season to await their fate in their bid to avoid relegation down to League One, and a trip to Wales to face promotion chasing Cardiff City looks a very tough task indeed, especially when you consider The Royals have lost three of their last four coming into this clash.
Defeats to Fulham, Sheffield Wednesday and Ipswich Town, the latter being a heavy 4-0 defeat at the Madejski Stadium means that Reading are still not safe yet from relegation. In addition, Reading’s form away from home has been dreadful in recent weeks as the Berkshire outfit have lost six of their last seven on their travels.
Reading were among the pre-season favourites to be considered for a possible play-off place, but an away record of 5-5-12 23/35 falls way below expectations, and they’re now fighting a desperate battle against the drop.
Cardiff should win this one at a canter.
