Celta Vigo Preview – Relegation beckons unless goals are sourced?

For a team currently embroiled in another battle for survival, that Celta Vigo (17th – W5 D12 L12) continue to throw precious points away like they have been doing recently must be incredibly frustrating for those supporters watching on from afar. Wednesday’s goalless draw away to Real Valladolid made it one point from six since the La Liga resumption, having lost 1-0 at home to Villarreal first time out.

Facing Valladolid a matter of days after enduring late frustration against Villarreal, whose late goal at Balaidos ensured all three points went the way of the away side, Celta Vigo can be heartened by producing a more accomplished team performance as they restricted the hosts to precious little in front of goal. All that was missing was a goal of their own, which should have arrived in the second period.

Usually dependable, Iago Aspas’ missed penalty at Valladolid could prove costly come the end of the season. It might have secured his team a valuable victory, but at the very least it would have ended his team’s scoring drought which now stands at four straight games without a goal, since a 1-0 win at home to Leganes in February. On a more encouraging note, it is one defeat from their last seven La Liga home games (W2 D4 L1).

Alaves Preview – Pressure easing on mid-table Alaves?

Buoyed by a huge win three days previous, and with enough points now on the board for them not be feeling undue pressure relating to relegation, could Alaves (12th – W9 D8 L12) upset the odds at Celta Vigo on Sunday? It wouldn’t be the first time. Victory at Balaidos would maintain an excellent recent record in this fixture for El Glorioso, who have won three and lost none of the last four league meetings.

Among their triumphs over Celta Vigo includes last season’s away encounter, when a single goal, scored by midfielder Tomas Pina, settled the contest in Alaves favour. Not even a goal has been conceded across the previous three meetings, winning this season’s first contest 2-0 at their Mendizorrotza residence. The setting for what was arguably their best result of the campaign just a few days ago.

Up against a side who were fourth at the time, Alaves would churn out a clinical performance to limit Champions League-chasing Real Sociedad to a meagre 0.49 in xG whilst carving out chances of their own equating to 1.98. The 2-0 scoreline a perfectly fair outcome as the club near the Basque region bounced straight back from losing 2-0 away to bottom side Espanyol in their first fixture since the restart.

Celta Vigo Vs Espanyol Betting Advice

Once again Celta Vigo are a short price to claim a win they dearly need. Once again I am perplexed as to why that it is. Granted they were unfortunate not to comply when favourites last time out in Valladolid. Yet this is still a team without a win in its last four league games whilst scoring only once across those same fixtures. Meanwhile Alaves, who should now feel they have enough points to begin relaxing, arrive in confident mood after an eye-catching win over Real Sociedad.

Celta Vigo Vs Alaves – Key Facts

  • Four games without a win in La Liga for Celta Vigo (D3 L1), who have taken one point from six since the restart.
  • Just one loss in their last five league games (W2 D3 L1) for Alaves, with that coming in their first fixture after the restart when playing most of the game in Espanyol with ten men.
  • Alaves can take heart from a healthy head-to-head record as well, boasting three wins and a draw from four previous league clashes with Celta Vigo.

Alaves have frustrated Celta Vigo more than once recently, as highlighted above. Their away record isn’t the best this season, at W2 D3 L9, but then neither is Celta Vigo’s record at home (W4 D5 L5) – just two teams managing fewer points from home fixtures in 2019/20. The visitors won this same fixture 1-0 last season and could be worth a look in the DrawNoBet market at 11/5 (Betfair).
