Celtic Preview

It’s been a strong start to the calendar year for Brendan Rodgers’ team who have rattled off three wins in a row, establishing a three-point lead at the top of the league in the process. Celtic have scored 10 goals without conceding in home matches against Airdrie in the Scottish Cup and St Mirren and Hamilton in the league. With teams below, them dropping points it’s been the ideal start to 2019 and Rodgers will be looking to underline that by extending the lead at the top to what would be the biggest of the season so far. Celtic have been active in the January transfer window with the loan signings of Timothy Weah and Oliver Burke who have strengthened their attacking options and have made an instant impact. The games are coming thick and fast for the Scottish Champions so with key players also due back from injury and international duty, it’s looking positive – and it will look even more so if they can get three points on Wednesday.

Key-Facts – Celtic v St Johnstone

  • This will be the third meeting of the season between these two and the first of three clashes in 10 days
  • Celtic have scored 33 goals and conceded just four at home all season in the league
  • St Johnstone drew both league games at Celtic Park in 2017/18

St Johnstone Preview

St Johnstone suffered their first defeat in five matches when losing 2-0 away to Hearts on Saturday and Tommy Wright was honest in his assessment that his players never performed to the standard they’ve shown in recent weeks. A trip to Celtic Park immediately after may not be the game Wright or his players would have wanted following a defeat but they know they can cause Celtic problems and drew on both visits last season, conceding only one goal. The Saints also have the best away record in the league this season so they know how-to pick-up points on the road and will look to cause their opponents problems. Although losing to Hearts was a blow to end their winning run, Sat Johnstone do have a healthy five-point cushion over seventh placed Livingstone and with a top-six finish the aim from the beginning of the season, they’re well on course to do so – especially if they can pick up some points in this one.

Celtic v St Johnstone Betting Advice

This will be the third meeting of the season between these two clubs and it’s also the first of three clashes within the next 10 days. Celtic have been victorious on both visits to Perth, winning 6-0 and 1-0. The latter of those victories came in the League Cup which Celtic went on to win, causing this game to be rescheduled to tomorrow. As well as another league fixture to come on Saturday, they’ve also been paired with each other in the next round of the Scottish Cup which will take place at Celtic Park.

There’s no doubt these teams are well acquainted with each other and will be even more so in the next few weeks. Rodgers will be well aware of his difficult a game lies in store against St Johnstone, particularly if the hosts cannot get an early goal. That was the case on both occasions last season so Celtic will be going all out to get into a lead early on, and on the evidence we’ve seen in the last few games their improved attacking options can so just that, and they can assert their dominance from there.
