Celtic Preview – Can Celtic keep pressure on leaders amd get revenge for the opening day?

Fresh off winning manager of the month for October, Ange Postecoglou will be relatively happy with how his team have dealt with November as they prepare to move into the busiest month of the season. Celtic won four from five games last month with the only loss being an unfortunate defeat away to Bayer Leverkusen which resigned them to playing Europa Conference League football after Christmas. Celtic’s 2-1 win at home to Aberdeen on Saturday extends their unbeaten league run to eight games.

Six wins and a couple of draws in that time sees them four points behind leaders Rangers but with this being the first of eight league games between now and the winter break (begins after their game on the 2^nd of January) there is plenty of opportunity for that to change.

 

 

Celtic will also have the League Cup final against Hibs and their final Europa League group match to contend with. It will be an examination of their fitness and endurance as much as their ability.

One player who will be essential to their success is Jota. The Portuguese winger has been in tremendous form of late scoring and creating goals. He’s looking for a sixth goal in as many games coming into this game and has quickly become a favourite amongst the fans who are desperate to see him signed on a permanent deal.

They may have played one game extra but the fact Hearts are a couple of points behind Celtic and could go above them with a win heading into December is an indication of the form that Robbie Neilson’s men have been in this season. Runaway winners of last season’s Championship, the Tynecastle club have lost just twice in their first 15 league games.

Hearts come into this match on the back of a well-earned 2-0 win at home to St Mirren on Saturday, preserving their unbeaten home record and extending it to eight games.

It’s not been quite as emphatic on their travels where they have a record of two wins in seven – the most recent of those being at the end of August. Their most recent five matches on the road have seen them collect three points with defeats away to Aberdeen and Motherwell more latterly.

Neilson will be aware that his players have it all to do if they are to maintain their current position over the course of the full season but there are no signs they’re going away. If they can improve their away form then it could be a campaign to remember.

Despite being the beginning of December this will be the third meeting between the sides this season. Hearts edged out Celtic on the opening day of the season before winning 3-2 in League Cup. That took their tally to 10 straight wins against this opponent when the two have met at Celtic Park.

The Hoops know they could be seven points behind with Rangers playing the day before whilst Hearts may drop into fourth if Dundee United prevail on Tuesday.

 

 

These two don’t like each other so there should be an edge to the game to make it even more competitive than it would be between two teams at the top end of the table.

Celtic have the best defence in the league and have conceded just two goals at home so far in the Premiership season. Four of Hearts seven away games have had two or fewer goals in them and that’s the bet I like here – under 2.5 goals.
