Celtic retain a three point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership as they welcome a St Mirren team to Celtic Park on Wednesday, with the visitors looking to take points off their hosts for a second game running.

Celtic Preview – Will Celtic bounce back from disappointing result and performance last time out?

Celtic would have thought their failure to collect three points on their trip to Easter Road to take on Hibs on Sunday would have seen their lead at the top reduced to a single point. So it was something of a bonus that their rivals also failed to win meaning they still hold the same advantage at the top as they did going in to the last round of games.

Perhaps the more concerning thing for Ange Postecoglou and the hopes of a title win in his first season is that the performance levels just have not been good enough in recent weeks. Celtic crashed out of Europe following an embarrassing aggregate defeat to Bodo Glimt. They have also scraped past bottom club Dundee at home and the manager was visibly frustrated with the cup win over lower league Raith Rovers.

There is still a lot to be positive about, however. That was Celtic’s first dropped points of the calendar year having won seven straight to start the calendar year. If they can repeat that sort of form in their remaining 10 games then they will end up champions.
The immediate challenge for Celtic is taking on two teams in the next few days who have already taken points off them, with Livingston to come away from home at the weekend.

St Mirren Preview – Can Saints frustrate the leaders as they look to improve top six chances?

With last week’s visit to Dundee being postponed due to the weather, Stephen Robinson’s first match in charge of St Mirren having taken over from Jim Goodwin came against high-flying Hearts on Saturday. An already difficult task was made even harder by the fact Saints went down to 10 men following an early red card to midfielder Connor Ronan. The Irishman will also miss this game as a result.

Like Celtic, however, that was a rare disappointment in what has been a very productive first part of the year for St Mirren. It was their first loss in 2022 and they have won more points than any other team outside of their opponents this year.

Coming at this point in the season will mean that Robinson will not want to change too much. He’s come into a team in form and the players will want the familiarity before the new man has time to mould the squad and adopt the playing style during the summer.

Saints will hope that this game is more like their last meeting with Celtic when they held them to a goalless draw at home rather than first meeting of the season when the Hoops thumped six past them at Celtic Park.

Celtic vs St Mirren Betting Advice

Ordinarily this is game that you would pencil in three points for Celtic. However, the last few weeks have shown us that not only are Postecoglou’s men fragile in defence (conceded nine goals in their last five matches) but their high-intensity, all-action attack is showing signs of slowing down. A bad combination at the business end of the season.

Celtic’s home record remains exceptional, though, with 11 wins and two draws in the league, so St Mirren know they will have to be at their best to get a result and keep their top six hopes alive.

Key Facts –  Celtic vs St Mirren Betting Tip

  • Celtic dropped their first league points of 2022 when drawing 0-0 with Hibs at the weekend
  • Stephen Robinson’s first game in charge of Saints ended in a 2-0 defeat at home to Hearts
  • The teams drew 0-0 when meeting in Paisley just before Christmas

It could be game where Celtic have to be patient. Seven of their last 10 home games have had two or fewer goals in the league whilst eight of St Mirren’s last 10 league games have went a similar way. Back under 2.5 goals here.
