Preview: All change in Charlotte as Christian Lattanzio takes charges for the very first time. He does so against the current third best team in the Eastern Conference, a New York Red Bulls outfit which came out top – albeit in New York – in the side’s maiden meeting little more than a fortnight ago.

Charlotte – New manager bounce pending?

Bank of California Stadium prepares to welcome a fresh face in the manager’s dugout following the dismissal of Miguel Angel Ramirez. The 37-year-old was shown the exit door in the aftermath of the 2-1 loss at Lumen Field to Seattle Sounders on 30 May, leaving his former assistant to take charge on an interim basis. Christian Lattanzio’s first task will be improving upon a record of two wins in seven MLS matches (D1 L4).

Fortunately for Lattanzio though, his first outing will be in front of a home crowd. Just three teams league-wide boast superior points-per-game returns in home matches than Charlotte FC, with only CF Montreal and LA Galaxy escaping unscathed of the seven visiting teams thus far (W5 L2). Meanwhile, their tally of four conceded at home – which averages out at 0.71 per game – is bettered only by Philadelphia Union.

Key Stat: With one drawn encounter all season (W5 D1 L8), Charlotte FC are among three sides with the joint-fewest number of drawn MLS games this term.

New York RB – Settled visitors primed for sixth away triumph?

The Red Bulls are firmly in contention to finish as the best in the East. They kick-off game number fifteen of their MLS season three points shy of New York City’s tally of 26, though the latter do posses a game in hand. Gerhard Struber’s men had shown signs of stagnating recently, though, but will be heartened by their recent 4-1 pasting of DC United. Consigning a four-match winless spell (D3 L1) to history.

Their most recent outing on the road would end in bitter disappointment though. A 2-0 scoreline to Inter Miami marking a first away league defeat of 2022 for a side which had won each of their opening five away contests but not the last twice (D1 L1). Statistically speaking, though, they are still the best travellers in the league this season – accumulating at least two away points more than the other 27 teams.

Key Stat: New York Red Bulls would only manage two defensive shutouts across seven MLS away games this season, conceding at least once in each of their past three such matches vs Chicago Fire, Philadelphia Union and Inter Miami.

Charlotte FC Vs New York Red Bulls Betting Advice

While this is a first MLS meeting between the clubs, they have met before. New York Red Bulls prevailing 3-1 just 16 days earlier in an US Open Cup tie. That was in the Big Apple. Albeit the Red Bulls best work has primarily been outside Red Bull Arena in 2022. That hasn’t been so much the case recently, though, NYRB following five consecutive away victories to start the season with a draw and loss in Philadelphia and Miami.

Charlotte FC Vs New York Red Bulls – Key Facts:

  • An all-eastern affair in MLS sees 11 hosting 3, with a Charlotte FC boasting the third-best points-per-game at home (W5 L2) take on a New York Red Bulls with the best away record league-wide (W5 D1 L1).
  • There were Under 2.5 Goals in five of the seven Charlotte FC MLS home matches this season, and in three of the past five New York Red Bulls away fixtures.
  • The teams have met recently. After trading early blows, with both scoring inside ten minutes, New York Red Bulls would ultimately prevail in New York on 26 May, 3-1, to move on to the US Open Cup semi-finals.

The Red Bulls’ dip in form away from New York has to be of some concern ahead of making their way to a venue where only two of seven previous visiting teams this season departed triumphant. The home side are also out to impress their new boss – if you can call a former assistant to the recently ousted Miguel Angel Ramirez ‘new’. I don’t envisage this being enough though, with NYRB’s underlying xG far superior.
