Charlton Athletic and Cardiff City meet at The Valley on Saturday lunchtime, with Neil Harris making a return to south London just a few weeks after being axed by Millwall. The manager has now replaced Neil Warnock as the Bluebirds’ boss and his team are slight favourites to claim the win.

Charlton Athletic surprised everyone by making a flying start to the season despite being one of the promoted clubs from League One last term. However, the Addicks started to stumble before the international break and manager Lee Bowyer has been complaining about injury concerns in the build-up to this one.

Charlton Prediction – Addicks Short of Players

Lee Bowyer reckons that he could be struggling to field a full bench for Saturday’s clash against Cardiff due to the number of injuries within the squad, something that makes for grim reading if you’re a Charlton fan. There are currently doubts over striker Lyle Taylor along with Jonathan Williams and Sam Field and they are now outsiders to win this clash.

Charlton sit eleventh in the Championship table and they have won six of their sixteen matches played including four at The Valley, although the results have dropped off a cliff in recent weeks and there have been six defeats in the past ten matches.

This includes a failure to land a win in the past four games, with a 2-2 draw at West Brom the only time they have avoided defeat during this time although they were desperately close to landing a point at The Den.

Charlton have raised their game to beat Leeds and Derby at home this season, while Stoke City and Brentford have also been defeated, although they will come up against a team who are experiencing a potential new manager bounce along with the fact that the visitors have a stronger group of players.

The big boost for the London side has been the scoring form of Macauley Bonne. The Ipswich-born forward arrived during the summer after plundering plenty of goals for Leyton Orient in the National League and he recently enjoyed a four game scoring run, thus compensating for the absence of Taylor.

However, that shortage of players and a reluctance to fill a bench could see them get a draw at best in this game and they have suffered three home defeats, with Bowyer still intent on making sure the team simply survive in this division this season.

Cardiff Prediction – Can Harris Land First Win at The Valley?

Cardiff City were among the favourites to land promotion this season and it should be noted that the Welsh club are currently in receipt of Premier League parachute payments due to their recent involvement in the top flight. Indeed, they made an excellent fist of trying to stay in the first division last term but were unable to make it.

This season, Neil Warnock set about trying to engineer another promotion for the Bluebirds although the experienced manager has essentially admitted defeat and resigned after the team lost at home to Bristol City just before the international break.

Cardiff sit fourteenth in the Championship table and Neil Harris has taken the new manager’s role after recently leaving Millwall, with the young manager now looking to make an impression and steer City back towards the top six in the Championship.

Harris did pretty well at The Den on a limited budget and might enjoy the chance to work with a different group of players who have previously shown themselves to be capable of engineering a promotion from this division.

The big problem for Cardiff this season has been a failure to win on the road, with four of their road trips ending in a draw and the other quartet resulting in a defeat.

Omar Bogle hasn’t scored since that opening match at Wigan and one of Harris’ remit will be to get the best out of players such as the striker, with Junior Hoilett, Lee Tomlin and Callum Paterson also highlighting that this isn’t a squad that is short of firepower.

While there are injury concerns in the form of Sean Morrison and Joe Ralls, there is enough quality in the visitors’ ranks along with that new manager motivation to get a positive result here.

Key-Facts – Charlton vs Cardiff

  • Cardiff are without an away win in the Championship
  • This will be Neil Harris’ first match in charge
  • Charlton might be struggling to name a full bench

Betting Tips Verdict

Charlton deserve tremendous credit for their first sixteen matches of the Championship season and they’ve made a big step towards cementing their place in the English second tier for another season.

Lee Bowyer came close to walking away from the club in the summer due to a lack of finances and it appears that could be coming back to haunt the Addicks when you consider the manager is struggling to fill his bench for this game.

We can’t be completely confident that Cardiff can break their duck on the road after failing to win any of their previous eight away matches although Neil Harris will be expecting a bounce from arriving at the club.
