Chaves fell to a 2-0 defeat away from home at bottom half outfit Tondela last time out in the Portuguese top flight, so they’ll no doubt be keen to get back to more familiar surroundings when they take on high-flying Sporting CP at their Estádio Municipal Eng. Manuel Branco Teixeira on Monday night.
Chaves have shown some solid form on home turf this season, and they’ve lost just once in their last ten in front of their home faithful, which was a heavy 4-0 loss to Primeira Liga leaders, Porto. Wins over Moreirense, Pacos de Ferreira, Vitoria Guimaraes and Estoril show they’re capable of holding their own against the teams around them in the division.
Chaves hold a fairly decent home record of 4-5-3 18/17 but two of their three defeats to date have been against top half opposition (Benfica and Porto). The hosts will be without Sporting loanee pair, forward Perreira and defender, Duarte.
Sporting CP registered an important 2-0 home win over Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League during the week, with two impressive points to make about the game; they did it without the services of their leading goalscorer, Dost, while fellow striker Montero bagged a brace.
Sporting will hit the road to take on Chaves, and although they’ll once again be without Dost, Montero’s two goal salvo will bring confidence into this trip, with Sporting knowing they cannot afford to drop points here as they chase down Benfica for second spot.
Sporting’s away record stands at a decent 7-3-2 22/12 but this masks the fact that Sporting have claimed just one win from their last five on their travels, which was a 2-1 win away at Tondela.
Sporting’s quality should just sneak it here.
