Chelsea responded to their recent defeat to West Ham with an emphatic 3-1 win away at Huddersfield Town during the week, and they’ll need to continue this momentum in Saturday’s home game against Southampton at Stamford Bridge if they’re to stay in the hunt for the title.
With Manchester City recording a record-breaking 15th successive league win in the week, Chelsea find themselves an almost unassailable 14 points behind the runaway league leaders, and it would take a dramatic dip in form for the rest of the chasing pack to even have a chance – assuming they all win of course!
Chelsea have suffered just one defeat from their last nine overall, but even that’s one too many as the margins for error are so slight now, but with four wins on the trot at home against Watford, Manchester United, Swansea City and Newcastle United, The Blues will be confident of three points here.
Onto Southampton, and although they sit in a comfortable mid-table position, they’re now four points adrift of 10th placed Everton who were previously struggling in the bottom half of the Premier League.
The Saints have now gone four league matches without a win following defeats to Manchester City and Leicester City which were either end of 1-1 draws with Bournemouth and Arsenal, while away from home, they’ve still only recorded one win so far.
That success came in a 1-0 win away at Crystal Palace back in September, but since then, the south coast outfit have taken just two points from a possible 15 on offer on the road, and an away record of 1-3-3 5/9 isn’t good enough to worry the top teams.
Chelsea’s firepower will be the difference against a lacklustre Southampton attack.
